Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) as a Consultant HPB and General Surgeon within a busy tertiary service, delivering specialist hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB), Emergency General Surgery (EGS) and Major Trauma, care to a large regional population.
The post offers a varied and rewarding role across elective and emergency pathways, including complex cancer surgery, MDT-led care, and outreach work, supported by a well-established multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting service growth, improving patient flow and outcomes, and contributing to NUH’s strategic priorities around high-quality care, performance and workforce sustainability, alongside opportunities in teaching, training and research within a major teaching hospital environment.

Person specification
Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- CCT expected by start date
- Intercollegiate exam in General Surgery or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Completion of an HPB fellowship in resection and/or liver transplant
- Higher degree (MD, PhD or similar)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Exposure to major complex HPB resections
- Ability to perform liver and pancreatic resections
- Independent in laparoscopic biliary surgery
- Experience in major trauma surgery
Desirable criteria
- Independent HPB consultant experience
- Exposure to major complex HPB resection with vascular operating techniques
- Experience in gynae ultra radical debulking
- Experience in MDT processes including vetting and triage
- Experience in robotic surgery
Communication and Relationship Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
Desirable criteria
- Specific training in communication skills
Analytical and Judgement Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit
- Able to teach and support junior staff effectively
- Track record of Undergraduate teaching
Desirable criteria
- Peer reviewed publications and presentations
Planning and Organisation Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
- Able to delegate appropriately
- Able to work in a team
Desirable criteria
- Experience of change management
