This is a substantive post for 10 programmed activities per week.


Applications are invited for a whole time Consultant in Virology and Infectious Diseases (10 PAs plus Infectious Diseases on-call supplement of 2%). The post-holder will join an enthusiastic team of 9 NHS and 2 academic consultants, including 2 consultant virologists in the Department of Microbiology, and 6 Consultants in Infectious Diseases and OPAT in the Department of Infectious Diseases.

Main duties of the job

The post will be divided between Virology and Infectious Diseases. The post-holder will be expected to provide Consultant Clinical Virology support and clinical liaison to the Trust and the General Practitioners of Nottingham City and South Nottinghamshire. This post supports the management of a large number of immunocompromised patients cared for within the two Trust hospitals. In addition, you will work closely with clinicians and other staff in Infection Prevention and Control, Occupational Health, Genitourinary Medicine, Haematology, Nephrology, Hepatology, Paediatrics and Antenatal Medicine. Duties in Infectious Diseases include contributions to an outpatient clinic, inpatient care and out of hours on call, in rotation with existing Consultants.

The well-equipped laboratory in the Queen’s Medical Centre has full CPA accreditation processing over 900,000 samples a year with a comprehensive molecular and serological service. The department is integrated with the University of Nottingham, for clinical, teaching and research activities, and the department has an active training, research and development programme to which the appointee will be expected to contribute. The post-holder will also be expected to be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit, undertake management activities and work in a multidisciplinary team.

Applicants must have dual accreditation in Virology and Infectious Diseases on the GMC’s specialist register, or be within six months of their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) date on interview day.

  • Higher professional degree e.g. MSc/MD/PhD
  • MRCP or evidence of equivalent training and experience

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register
  • CCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Clinical skills/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidenced technical and clinical skills as described in the job description
  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
