Lead Midwife - Regulation and Professional Practice

This is a key leadership role within the Iindependent Maternity Review (IMR), supporting and enabling the Chief Nurse Office in relation to regulation and professional practice; including external bodies e.g. NMC, CQC. The post holder is responsible for regulation and professional practice for the Independent Maternity Review (IMR) leading across all areas of work which are generated through the IRM teams, both external and internal. In addition, the post holder will ensure that actions deriving from the IMR are progressed, liaising with key leaders to ensure timely completion. The post holder will work across and support areas all activities within the internal IMR team and all specialities in scope of the review.

·         Work alongside the chief Nurse Office and Trust leads for regulation and professional practice to ensure timely identification and resolution of Fitness to Practice concerns using a restorative and just culture approach.

·         Provide support to the core IMR team across the regulation and professional practice agenda for the IMR response.

·         Work collaboratively with the clinical and specialist teams that provide information to support the IMR response.

·         Work closely with the chief Nurse Office and core IMR team and Family Health Leadership team to embed policy and practice to support regulatory Fitness to Practice and local resolution  of fitness to practice enquires

·         Support and develop a culture of informed questioning, trend analysis triangulation, challenge and assurance in a just, restorative and positive way in all aspects of the role.

·         Work with the core IMR team, Midwifery and Neonatal Leads to identify and share any emergent themes and learning with the directorate and the Family Health leadership team

·         Support with any action planning required from the emerging themes and learning

·         Act as a self-relating practitioner who horizon scans to ensure the IRM response and activities remain in line with current best practice

        Support the development and delivery of the IMR Response Team programme of work/plan in line with local and statutory requirements.

        Lead on the collation of documents / evidence needed for the IMR in relation to regulation and professional practice

        Support with delivery of any actions identified to improve outcomes in relation to women, birthing people and families

        Contribute to internal and external Trust publications as required in relation to the IMR

        Respond to internal and external requests for information relating to the IMR

        Monitor the implementation and progress of systems in place to respond effectively and deliver the requirements of the IMR escalating as appropriate areas of concern

        Prepare and present data and reports for relevant groups and committees as directed by the IMR Core team and Chief Nurse Office

        Interpret complex information to identify key themes, trends and hotspots

        Collate and analyse quantitative and qualitative information to support the implementation of good practice and quality improvements.

        Support in the identification of areas of risk and the development of actions to reduce/mitigate against the risk occurring or re-occurring.

        Support the effective implementation of a comprehensive and systematic approach to the regulatory and professional practice portfolio of IMR activities

        Work in collaboration with colleagues, providing expertise to contribute to a whole pathway approach to IMR activities

        Support and promote a positive culture of quality and service improvement.

        Develop and maintain links with stakeholders, external agencies, and third sector parties to ensure their participation and contribution to delivery of the IMR programme

        Proactively identify innovative ways to improve the IMR response, efficacy and efficiency

        Effectively communicate complex, sensitive, and contentious information.

        Use tested and credible tools and techniques to undertake any evaluation and analysis required within the programme

        Assist with problem-solving to find and address issues or concerns

        Use critical evaluation and problem-solving skills to respond to changing priorities and to make improvements as required

        Support with developing appropriate reporting and information sharing systems to facilitate effective working practices for new end to end processes.

        Support the development of business cases if required.

        Contribute to ensuring that the regulatory and professional practice programme outputs are of a high quality and on time.

        Work independently based on an agreed work plan, setting own priorities and standards, working cooperatively to achieve the programme objectives related to quality and improvement.

        Facilitate an inclusive culture and ethos at all times working with colleagues internally and externally to the organisation.

Training & Qualifications

  • NMC Registered Nurse, Midwife or dual qualified nurse/midwife.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or closely health related degree.
  • Evidence of completed Masters level training.
  • Additional related clinical specialist qualification.
  • Experience of professional regulation in a health or social care environment
