There are around 100 patients on peritoneal dialysis (mostly APD). We run an in house assisted APD programme which is being expanded to provide connect and disconnect services. A medical PD insertion pathway has recently been introduced.

There are typically around 380-400 patients on haemodialysis (including around 120 at the City Campus Main Unit, 60 at the City Campus Centenary Unit, 80 at Kings Mill Hospital, 50 at Ilkeston Community Hospital, 50 at Lings Bar Hospital and 30 patients on home dialysis).

Around 720 transplant patients are under regular review. The unit performs approximately 80 adult renal transplants per year, from both DCD and DBD donors. We have an active live donor kidney transplant programme with work underway to expand this further. There are currently approximately 250 patients on the transplant list. The regional Transplant Improvement Group, and Midlands Renal Operational Delivery Network, ensures close working relationships between the transplant units within the midlands, and the associated referring renal units.

The Nottingham Renal and Transplant Unit, based on City Campus, provides all aspects of care for adult patients with renal disease for the mid-Trent area.  The related Paediatric Nephrology Unit takes referrals from the whole of Trent, South Yorkshire and the North Anglia area.

Our clinical facilities are excellent. The Renal and Transplant Unit includes a 12-bedded higher dependency ward for renal transplants and the more seriously ill patients (Carrel ward), together with a 20-bedded general nephrology ward (Bramley ward). Haemodialysis can be provided at all inpatient bed spaces and on the higher dependency ward all bed spaces are monitored with central telemetry. The accommodation includes a dedicated outpatient department, home therapies area, offices, and two adjacent Haemodialysis Units (26 & 14 stations, respectively).

Geography

The Nottingham Renal and Transplant Unit serves a population of approximately one million for dialysis, with most patients coming from Nottinghamshire but also parts of Derbyshire and Lincolnshire.  Apart from Nottingham itself (population 642,000) the other main town nearby is Mansfield (population 200,000 including surrounding districts). The catchment area for adult transplants is roughly 1.79 million as patients from the Derby Renal Unit are referred to Nottingham for transplantation.  Nottingham is the only centre in the region for paediatric nephrology.

The renal and transplant unit currently supports around 750 prevalent transplant patients and over 450 dialysis patients. We have established programmes for peritoneal and home haemodialysis, and three satellite dialysis units. We average around 80-90 transplants per year. Our unit thrives on a strong multidisciplinary culture and has been at the forefront of many national and international initiatives. There is a strong base and foundation for clinical research. Nottingham is the regional centre for paediatric nephrology. Nottingham Renal Unit also provides renal services at Kings Mill hospital in Mansfield.

The successful applicants would start in March 2026 or as soon as possible after that.
