Job overview

NUH is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated 4 Trust Grade doctor at ST3 level or above to support our neurosurgical department. This placement is for 12 months initially but may be extended.

 

This is an exciting opportunity to get excellent experience in neurosurgery. The post holder will be part of a team which include run through trainees as well as other trust grade doctors. You will work closely with consultants, other junior doctors and multi-disciplinary teams. The post holder will be part of an on call rota at QMC.

 

 

There are ample opportunities for work based assessments from the supervising consultants. You will also be allocated a Clinical Supervisor who will help identify career progression opportunities.

 

The post holder will contribute to an on-call rota and should therefore have previous neurosurgery registrar experience (or equivalent), have full MRCS and have experience working within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support various aspects of this busy service, with a commitment to the out of hours rota. The daytime role will include cover of the neurosurgical wards, clinics, pre-admissions and theatres. These duties are allocated on a weekly basis.

 

The post holder will be expected to;

 

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient services (theatres and clinics) under consultant supervision
  • Contribute to the emergency out of hours rota
  • Supervise daily ward rounds
  • Conduct patient management in line with plans agreed with the Consultants
  • Support and teach junior colleagues effectively  
  • Participate in M&M and MDT meetings
  • Contribute to Quality & Improvement Projects within the department
  • Attend departmental meetings

Working for our organisation

QMC Neurosurgery department is now one of the busiest neurosurgical departments in the country. We provide both adult and paediatric services to a wide regional area of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire with catchment population of around 3.5 million.

Nottingham neurosurgical team is led by 14 consultants providing treatment for all the major subspecialties of neurosurgery. Our highly specialised unit carries around 2000 neurosurgical emergency, urgent and elective operations a year. We are vital part of the East midlands trauma service and major trauma unit. We run 4 modern and fully equipped theatres and have access to one emergency theatre every day. The department is well equipped with up-to-date neuro navigation systems, intraoperative ultrasound, 5-ALA and ICG enabled microscopes and endoscopes. Our latest addition state of art Intraoperative MRI help us to provide best care for our paediatric and adult tumour patients. Nottingham University Hospitals’ brain tumour centre is one of few units in country to be recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence following the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission.

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice in the UK
  • Full MRCS or equivalent

  • Postgraduate Qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good and wide ranging recent experience of Neurosurgery in acute inpatient setting in a large acute hospital
  • Evidence of completion of key competencies equivalent to at least junior registrar level (logbook)
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement
  • Potential to develop excellent diagnostic skills
  • Experience of working out of hours with limited support
  • Experience of supervising junior colleagues
  • Experience leading a multidisciplinary team
