Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an existing band 6 or experienced band 5 to join the Medicine and Surgery Occupational Therapy Team, based at QMC. This post is for a permanent, full time team member.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is committed to further improving their clinical skills and who puts excellent quality care at the heart of their practice. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience of complex case management, rehabilitation skills, and leadership qualities.
We are proud to be a referral-based generalist team, providing OT input to a variety of specialities including general medicine, vascular surgery, respiratory, gynaecology, surgical admissions, ENT and Maxillo-facial surgery, hepatobiliary, colorectal and gastro including specialist feeding unit. Recent complex patients have included individuals with functional neurological disorder, drug and alcohol excess and complex psychosocial factors.
Our team also provides the unique opportunity to work with new and established vascular lower limb amputees, including recovery and rehabilitation, wheelchair provision and access and discharge visits within the patient’s home environment.
The successful candidate will join a supportive team who promote the importance of ongoing learning and development. There will be opportunity to contribute to service development.
Main duties of the job

- Supporting with allocation and prioritisation of caseloads
- Complex case management and discharge planning
- Goal setting and rehabilitation
- Working as an integrated part of the MDT, across specialties, including joint working
- Providing clinical support to members of the team
- Providing supervision to more junior staff (e.g. band 5, support workers)
- Supporting student placements
- Promoting and support professional development of team members
- Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team in all clinical areas
- Working with band 7’s and other senior staff to develop the service and encourage evidence based practice
- Engaging in and leading in-service training, as well as providing education to wards and promotion of the OT role
- Deputising for band 7’s when required
- Working flexibly - including weekend working

The Occupational Therapy service is part of the Therapies, Outpatients and Phlebotomy Services (TOPS) Directorate, within the Specialist Clinical Services care group. We are a diverse directorate of AHPs, nursing and support staff, employing around 1000 staff, working together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the directorate leadership team have AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent core occupational therapy skills in assessment and intervention.
A willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally, is essential. You must have an open mind to new ways of working and be flexible, dynamic, and forward thinking. Strong leadership qualities are essential in this post.
You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously and provide support to other members of the team including peers, Band 5 OT’s (including preceptees), support workers, and students. You will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service.

- Full time, permanent position – 37.5 hours per week,
- Core hours are worked 8am-4pm, Monday – Friday.
- Additional duties will include participation in weekend working. Weekends are rostered with expected frequency of approx. 2 every 6 months (note frequency may increase dependent on service need and staffing levels)

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
- • HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist
- • Able to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities
Experience
Essential criteria
- • Experience of working within an acute inpatient setting
- • Experience of using evidenced based practice to inform own practice and that of others
Desirable criteria
- Previous NHS experience
Communication and relationship skills
Essential criteria
- • Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills
- • Able to communicate patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors.
- • Able to effectively use a range of written and verbal communication skills with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating eg. Patients may be dysphasic, deaf, who may be unable to accept diagnosis or have terminal illness
Analytical and judgement skills
Essential criteria
- • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of junior OT staff and support staff
- • Risk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of complex wheelchair patients
- • Independently work through the OT process with patients requiring a permanent wheelchair
Planning and organisation skills
Essential criteria
- • Able to plan own clinical activity to meet clinical needs of patients when demand exceeds capacity
- • Able to make judgements about the prioritising of caseloads when demand exceeds capacity and to support junior and support staff in this process
Physical skills
Essential criteria
- • Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes safe wheelchair positioning, maximising patient ability

- • Flexibility to work elsewhere in Therapies or as required across both campuses
- • Flexible working schedules including participation in weekend rosters where required
