B7 Occupational Therapist - Major Trauma, Trauma & Spines team leader

Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and compassionate occupational therapist, for a B7 Team Leader role in our QMC Major Trauma / Trauma and spines service. The team covers the wards on the  QMC campus and works in collaboration with the other OT teams as well as the wider MDT.

We welcome applications from experienced B6 OTs looking to move to B7 roles, as well as already-established B7s.

Co-leading the team with a B7 Advanced Practitioner, this role offers expert clinical advice to therapy and specialty teams, supporting staff with decision making for patients with complex needs, upskilling and service development. Team leadership includes promoting high-quality patient care through monitoring performance, offering supervision and development conversations, and ensuring the team has resources and equipment required for their roles. Support will be given to develop these skills where needed.

The successful candidate will have wide-ranging rehab skills, including acute inpatient rehabilitation, splinting & bracing as well as discharge planning. 

Developing true MDT working as well as  skills in creating professional networks to influence service improvement, educating others, team leadership and management will be an advantage.

Co-leading the Major Trauma  / trauma & spinal OT service in a dynamic and growing speciality, providing a responsive and timely service.

Providing a supportive environment for team members under your direct management, including undertaking annual appraisals and managing health and wellbeing.

Contributing to the education and teaching of all team members including students, preceptees, B6s and support workers.

Ensuring that high quality, evidenced based practice, service development and education underpin the service delivery.

Ensuring that NUH values and behaviours are embedded in everyday practice.

You will have excellent communication and team working skills, with the ability to apply problem-solving skills to patient care and leadership tasks.  As this role will include working with patients and their families during potentially stressful life events, including end of life situations, a compassionate and resilient character is required.

This post will allow an OT with a keen interest in team leadership and inpatient care to expand clinical skills and leadership of a busy and responsive service, with a focus on leading and developing staff to support patient flow whilst promoting excellent patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will demonstrate advanced level occupational therapy skills in assessment and diverse interventions to facilitate rehabilitation and discharge planning.  

A willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally and to lead on this within the team is essential.  The successful applicant must be open minded to new ways of working and lead on this.  The ideal individual for this role needs to be flexible, dynamic and forward thinking. Strong leadership qualities are essential in this post, alongside advocating  for the OT role in the MDT setting. You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously to an advanced level and provide support to other members of the team, including peers, Band 5 OT’s, including preceptees, support workers and students. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service.

This role is a permanent position, offered full time (37.5h).  Core hours are working Monday-Friday 8am-4pm.  Additional duties will include participation in weekend working – these are rostered approximately once per month but many increase depending on clinical need.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) or equivalent qualification in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of CPD in specialist area
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree or masters modules

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide ranging and extensive experience of working within specialist area
  • Experience managing staff performance and sickness, participation in recruitment processes
  • Experience in evaluation of evidence-based practice, audit, service development and benchmarking; use of outcome measures
  • Experience of training and supervising students

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent written, non-verbal and verbal communication skills
  • Communicates complex patient related information effectively to patient, family and MDT where there may be barriers to understanding
  • Offers constructive criticism with tact and diplomacy, in performance management of staff
  • Demonstrates leadership ability

  • Able to assess complex information, formulate a diagnosis and plan patient management using clinical reasoning skills and a range of treatment options
  • Able to solve problems within the team and make decisions where there are a range of options - including clinical and strategic issues

Essential criteria
  • Able to organise and prioritise individual and team workload
  • Effective delegation and time management skills

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes rehabilitation if applicable
