Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a  clinical fellows to join the oncology department.

This post is based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post will provide an opportunity to train in all aspects of Oncology. It is for 12 months to cover maternity leave. The post would be suitable for ST3 level trainees keen to gain extra oncology experience prior to obtaining a National Training Number (NTN).

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants would be attached to an oncology consultant and would work similarly to our NTN’s. The timetable would consist of acute oncology work, clinic attendance, radiotherapy planning and exposure to clinical trials. On call duties would be available on the SPR rota for those with full MRCP qualification. Site specialisation can be discussed with candidates if they have a strong preference or are thinking of this post as a step to an alternative career path e.g. palliative care or respiratory medicine. Of note, all the 4 clinical fellows from 2016 all succeeded in obtaining an NTN in their chosen speciality and first choice of region.

Working for our organisation

The Department serves a resident population of 1.1 million and currently sees approximately 3000 new patients each year; providing a comprehensive range of non-surgical Oncology services to the East Midlands. The Department has around 30  Medical Oncology and Clinical Oncology Consultants providing site specialist care in multi-disciplinary teams.

 

There is an active training programme for Junior Staff. The department has trainees as part of the Trent Deanery training rotations.

 

There are currently around 50  Junior Doctor roles comprising Clinical Oncology and Medical Oncology Specialist Trainees, Clinical Fellows and Foundation Doctors.

 

There is an internationally recognised PGDIP Course in Oncology run by the Academic Department.

The Department has a very active Clinical Trials programme with a dedicated research team for academic, NCRN and industry lead studies as well as integral working with the NCRN research team.

There is a commitment from all staff to research, development and clinical audit within the Department at a multidisciplinary level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical                        The post holder would be responsible for the assessment and treatment of oncology patients with a range of malignancies. They will undertake the following duties:

  1. Assist in the supervision of junior doctors on the ward to support the effective decision making to support high quality care and throughput of patients.
  2. Support the effective and timely review of patients in the Acute Admission area of the Division to ensure that patient flows are maintained to the base wards that discharge out of hospital can take place.
  • Attendance at outpatient clinics assisting with patient follow up and on treatment clinics. Clinics will be held at either Nottingham City Hospital or Kingsmill Hospital Mansfield. He/she will have the opportunity to select site specific clinics if desired.
  1. Provide support to Consultants and other members of the MDT in the recruitment of patients to agreed clinical trials.

Teaching / Education  The post holder would be invited to attend all specialist registrar training and educational meetings within the department. They would be expected to contribute with training junior doctors and students on the ward. In addition we intend to offer funding and access to the Oncology PGCert/PGDip.

Clinical Research        The post holder will be encouraged to carry out a piece of clinical research and to present it at an appropriate meeting. A supervisor would be allocated to help and support this.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration and License to Practice
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent * ( Candidates with who have Passed part 1 and/or 2 with or without PACES )

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Broad based knowledge of and understanding of General Medicine.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in Oncology/Haemtology
  • Teaching medical students
  • Experience of audit

Qualities and attributes

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team
  • Demonstrate ability to keep good medical records and communicate with other hospital departments
  • Demonstrate ability to understand and communicate with patients and colleagues
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate ability to undertake research projects and audit
  • Demonstrate ability to undertake investigative, audit, and research work outside immediate clinical responsibility.

  • Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013).
