Consultant in General Paediatrics – Complex Medical Care

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

We are looking to appoint a Consultant in General Paediatrics with a focus on Complex Medical Care at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy, supportive and developing General Paediatric service. The post will help strengthen consultant capacity for children and young people with medical complexity, alongside contribution to General Paediatric service weeks, outpatient clinics, Advice and Guidance, medical student teaching and the wider consultant on-call rota.

The successful candidate will work closely with paediatric specialty teams, nursing colleagues, allied health professionals, community services, primary care and families to support joined-up, safe and child-centred care. The post will suit a consultant with strong general paediatric experience, a clear interest in complex medical needs, and the ability to work across organisational and specialty boundaries.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide consultant level support and oversight for children and young people with medical complexity, including ward rounds, care co-ordination, multidisciplinary team working and liaison with specialist paediatric teams.

The postholder will contribute to General Paediatric service weeks, including ward rounds, assessment of acutely unwell children, clinical decision making, trainee supervision and close working with nursing, therapy and wider multidisciplinary colleagues.

The role will include General Paediatric outpatient clinics and young person’s epilepsy clinics, with responsibility for associated clinical administration, timely correspondence, investigation follow up and effective pathway management.

The appointee will also provide Advice and Guidance to support primary care and partner services, helping to reduce avoidable referrals and improve timely access to specialist paediatric advice.

The postholder will support undergraduate medical student teaching as part of the Child Health programme and will be expected to take an active role in teaching, supervision, audit, clinical governance, incident review, risk management and service improvement
