Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust with expertise in Paediatrics (including Adult and Paediatric Strabismus). We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team of 25 Ophthalmic Consultants at Queen’s Medical Centre working together to make a difference to Ophthalmology services within Nottingham and beyond.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and be on the GMC Specialist Register for surgical Ophthalmology or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

The Ophthalmology unit offers a comprehensive range of routine, urgent and specialist ophthalmic services and the post-holder will be expected to play an active role in the development and provision of the Paediatric sub-specialty services for patients at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

A full range of Ophthalmology patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.

Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency Ophthalmic service.

Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department.

These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service.  If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her Consultant colleagues, and the Trust.

The person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times.

Person specification

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • Eligible to be included on the specialist register
  • CCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Professsional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCS/FRCOphth or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher professional degree, ChM, DM, PhD or equivalent

Clinical Skills / Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full general ophthalmic surgical training with extensive experience of general ophthalmology with sub-specialty expertise in Paediatrics
  • Fellowship level in Paediatrics
  • Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description and person specification
  • Able to perform ROP screening and treatment services
  • Able to perform paediatric cataract surgery independently
  • Able to perform adult strabismus surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
  • Experience of working within a paediatric ophthalmology service
  • Able to manage patients with ocular motility issues including adults
  • Special interests in subspecialties within paediatric ophthalmology (eg. glaucoma and oculoplastics)

Management and Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
  • Able to delegate appropriately
  • Able to work in a team
  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Higher management degree/qualification/training
  • Experience of change management

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit
  • Evidence of participation in clinical research
  • Able to teach and support junior staff effectively
