Senior Assistant Technical Officer - Clinical Trials

Job overview

We are looking for a highly organised and detail-focused Senior Assistant Technical Officer to join our Pharmacy Clinical Trials team. This is an exciting opportunity to support the safe, compliant, and efficient management of Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs).

Working closely with specialist Clinical Trials Pharmacists and Technicians, you will play a key role in ensuring the accurate handling, storage, dispensing, and documentation of trial medications in line with study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and regulatory requirements.

*Must have completed the level 2 pharmacy dispensary qualification to work as a band 3. If working towards this or need to undertake the qualification, successful applicant will be a band 2 until qualification is completed. 

This interesting and varied role requires the individual to be meticulous and detail focused.

You should be able work under pressure, prioritise and organise workloads and be able to work alone or as part of a bigger team. 

We are looking for confident self-motivated individuals with excellent IT, communication, problem solving and decision making skills.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in the receipt, storage, and accountability of Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs)

  • Support the preparation, dispensing, and labelling of clinical trial medications

  • Maintain accurate pharmacy trial documentation and accountability logs

  • Ensure appropriate storage conditions and temperature monitoring of trial medicines

  • Support stock control, reconciliation, and returns/destruction processes

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Possession of, or willing to undertake, or complete NVQ level 2 Pharmacy Services (or equivalent) including relevant modules for this post.
  • GCSE (or equivalent) grade 4 (grade C) or above in Maths and English Language
  • To be able to learn new skills and knowledge and to implement these into standard practice to maintain competencies through validation
Desirable criteria
  • GCSE (or equivalent) grade 4 (grade C) in Science subjects, Biology or Chemistry

Experience

Essential criteria
  • To be able to work as part of a team
  • Following strict procedures and guidelines
  • Evidence of IT experience
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital Pharmacy ATO or Community Pharmacy Assistant experience
  • Experience in a pharmacy production environment. Experience in aseptic production
  • Experience in stock control procedures

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate clearly, both verbally and electronically within a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate that they are approachable and be able to relay information in a manner that others including service users, understand
  • Respond in a mature and positive manner to both positive and negative feedback, to reflect on practice and make any necessary corrective changes

Planning and Organisation Skills

Essential criteria
  • Methodical and well organised
  • Able to prioritise tasks in accordance with department and service users’ needs.
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Able to multitask
Desirable criteria
  • Able to work on own initiative and manage own time to meet deadlines

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to exert light to moderate physical effort, stand, for long periods and sit for short to long periods using IT equipment
