Physiotherapy Support Worker: spinal wards

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a band 3 Physiotherapy Support Worker to be a  static member of staff on Spinal unit  at NUH NHS trust on a permanent basis.

Full time: 37.5 hours Working pattern: Sunday to Thursday (Initially the staff member will be working Monday to Friday to learn the processes and procedures). Full time working pattern, part-time and flexible working patterns not considered at this time"

 The successful candidate will also be required to join the orthopaedic rota system to cover bank holidays

You will work under the supervision and guidance of trained physiotherapists supporting the multidisciplinary team to provide physiotherapy assessment and intervention to rehabilitate and facilitate hospital discharges.

The Spinal physiotherapy team is responsible for providing physiotherapy cover across  the spinal unit on ward D8 at NUH which are located at Queens Medical Centre (QMC). You will be expected to be able to work flexibly at times supporting both major trauma and the trauma wards at QMC.

Main duties of the job

You will mostly work alongside a qualified physiotherapist providing initial intervention which includes mobility, transfers and balance assessment as well as gathering information from patients, relatives and carers regarding social history, making use of our therapy assessment form.

Under the supervision of a physiotherapist, you will set and provide treatment and discharge plans which includes provision of walking aids, progression of mobility, confidence building, strengthening exercise and falls prevention, being able to promote safety and wellbeing as well as independence within essential activities of daily living.  

You will need excellent communication skills to work alongside the wide MDT and will be required to work closely with occupational therapists providing an integrated therapy approach.

You will have non-clinical responsibilities such as data collection, management of walking aid supply and stocking levels as well as other admin and housekeeping duties.

There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE (A-C) English and maths or equivalent
  • Working towards or achieved NVQ level 3 or equivalent in health related subject.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience as a therapy or rehab assistant
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS or a care setting

  • Effective written, verbal and listening communications skills.
  • The ability to communicate with patients who have communication difficulties.
