Burns and Plastic Team Leader Physiotherapist

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for someone who wants to specialise in the area of Hands, Burns and Plastics and feels ready to take the next step in their career to working as a Band 7. This is an opportunity for a highly skilled physiotherapist who is passionate about working with people who have undergone a hand injury/surgery, burns of varying significance or plastic surgery.  The hours are full time and are based predominantly at the City Campus of NUH but at least one half day per week at Queens Medical Centre to cover the paediatric aspect of this workload.

The main clinical aspect of the role will involve working with hand out patients, post trauma/surgery/elective surgery.  On a lesser scale it will involve some inpatient activity with general burns and plastic patients following injury/surgery of varying significance. 

You will ensure the smooth, safe and efficient running of both the adult and paediatric burns & plastic physiotherapy service and in conjunction with the band 8a ensure all staff are trained and governance issues within the service are monitored/updated.

You will work alongside a very experienced band 8a and within a very supportive and friendly team of consultants, nursing staff, occupational therapists and psychologists.

The successful candidate will be based on Burns and Plastics  physiotherapy team at City and QMC Campus. You will work alongside the Leadership team, and Consultant Physiotherapist delivering senior leadership to this service. You will be expected to have a broad base of acute skills and must have strong clinical knowledge and experience of working with this client group.  Due to the acute nature of the post you will have the skills to treat these patients as well as provide training and development of junior staff. Working alongside the Consultant Physiotherapist, your role will be key in the operational delivery of the service.

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 600 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent core physiotherapy skills with a specialism of Burns and Plastics. You will have a willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally. You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team who will give support and training for you to develop in this role to reach your full potential. You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously and provide support to less experienced members of the team. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service.

Training and Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in relevant qualification
  • Full HCPC registration
  • Evidence of master’s level study, master’s degree or working towards one.
  • Evidence of post registration education in specialist clinical areas

Experience

  • Wide ranging and extensive experience of working within specialist area
  • Knowledge of management processes to be able to provide 1st line management
  • Experience of delegating to and supervising other members of the team
  • Able to plan and deliver clinical education about theory and practice to individuals, team and the wider MDT (including students)
  • Knowledge of current best practice within a clinical specialty
  • Knowledge of national and local standards and national guidelines
  • Basic IT and computer skills and have the ability to learn how to use specific software
  • Able to undertake evidence based audit of own practice and the practice of other staff within a specific clinical area
  • Able to evaluate current research and make recommendations for change in practice and implement these changes

  • Able to understand team dynamics and adapt approach to achieve the best outcome for patients

  • Communicate complex patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors
  • Able to present clinical information to health professions at National Conference level or equivalent

  • Able to make decisions about the allocation of a caseload to a team of staff
  • Lead on the development of improvements in service delivery and clinical practice using evidence based practice to recommend changes
  • Understands responsibility of self and others for clinical and cost effective use of resources
  • Able to record and use relevant information in daily work including computer data entry of patient and other information and support other member so the team in doing so
