Job overview

These  posts of Therapy Assistant Practitioner (TAP) will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide appropriate assessment, treatment and discharge planning for patients under the supervision of a senior clinicians such as  physiotherapists and occupational therapists. 

This is a static  post on the trauma wards at QMC. 

Significant competency based training and supervision will be delivered by registered PT & OT staff on the trauma wards.

A passion for the trauma case load is required as is a commitment to true team working and a positive outlook.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will process referrals, undertake assessments and treatment using clinical decision making tools to interpret this assessment information and plan treatment/discharge planning accordingly under the supervision of registered clinicians.

The Therapy  Assistant Practitioner will work across Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. Their role will be to integrate rehabilitation into all interactions with patients to optimise their recovery. This will include utilising varying motivational tools, equipment and technology throughout the day; appropriate training and supervision will be provided to facilitate this.

The role will require the post holder to lead both individual and group sessions such as education or exercise classes. The post holder will frequently work independently to promote wellbeing, safety and independence within essential activities of daily living, by providing instruction, advice and treatment to the patient and/or their carers. The main aim of the role is to provide rehabilitation intensity to maximise patient outcomes and recovery and support the multidisciplinary team in facilitation of a safe transition from hospital.

This is a very exciting time to become part of the Rehabilitation team at NUH .  We are looking for ambitious and dedicated people to join us on this journey.

These static therapy  posts are to provide our patients with the best possible care and outcomes as well as set a new standard for rehabilitation. 

The post of a TAP will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide appropriate assessment, treatment and discharge planning for patients under the supervision of senior clinicians.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE (A-C) English/Maths or equivalent
  • NVQ/QCF level 3 in healthcare or equivalent relevant qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Foundation degree in Health and Social care or equivalent level 5 qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience as a Band 3 therapy support worker
  • Experience of managing own caseload
  • Experience working with an MDT
  • Ability to deal with pressured or unexpected situations
  • Involvement in supporting less experienced staff
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience as a rehab assistant practitioner, band 4

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Effective written, verbal and non verbal communication skills
  • Able to build rapport and demonstrate interpersonal skills
  • ABility to communicate complex information with patients who have impaired communication abilities

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • To be able to demonstrate a responsible attitude/professional behaviour
  • Ability to use problem solving skills and work on own initiative
  • ABle to evaluate patient conditions and adapt treatment as necessary
  • Able to take an active role in supervision and reflective practice
  • Understand the scope of role and seek direction as necessary

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of time management skills and ability to prioritise
  • To be able to work on own initiative
  • To deal with non routine and unpredicatable nature of workload

Physical

Essential criteria
  • Able to undertake therapeutic moving and handling
  • Experience of using IT

Other

  • Must be flexible with working requirements
  • Must be able to travel across NUH sites
