Job overview
We are recruiting for a full time Specialist doctor in Rheumatology to join a dynamic team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a fixed term post for 12 months.
Applications are welcome from those who wish to work less than full time.
We would happily support a candidate who wishes to achieve specialist registration via CESR.
The successful applicant(s) will join an established team of 8 pure Rheumatologists, and 2 Acute Physician Rheumatologists. The post holder will be encouraged to maintain and develop special interests to complement those in the department.
This is a pure Rheumatology post and includes opportunities for the successful candidate(s) to engage in education, research, management and acute medicine.
Main duties of the job
Outpatient clinics
All out-patient rheumatology clinics and day case services are held in Gateway E in the Nottingham Treatment Centre, which is a modern purpose built, self-contained facility on the QMC campus. NUH have recently been awarded a 5-year contract to run the services at the Treatment Centre. Consultation rooms, patient waiting rooms, venesection service, pharmacy, ultrasound facilities and radiology (including MRI and CT) are all in very close proximity on a single level. Equipment and support is available for musculoskeletal ultrasound within the clinic and ward environment.
Rheumatology on-call rota
The rheumatology consultants on the rota support our Specialist Registrars in providing the NUH rheumatology on-call rota supporting inpatient areas 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, and 10am-12pm on Saturday and Sunday. The on call duties are part of ‘Consultant of the Week’ with no other conflicting clinical commitments.
Acute medicine opportunity
Opportunities to take part in acute medicine shifts is encouraged and is negotiable; an example would be 0.4 PA in the job plan. This allows the applicant to keep their general medicine skills current.
Education and training
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the Educational activity of the Department for trainees at all levels from undergraduate rheumatology teaching, to postgraduate teaching at the weekly postgraduate education sessions and the regional Specialty Registrar training days.

Professional registration
Essential criteria
- MBBS degree
- Full GMC registration with licence to practice at time of appointment
- Eligible to work in the UK
- MRCP (UK)
- ALS
- CPD evidence and best practice/ research awareness
Desirable criteria
- Working towards CESR in Rheumatology
Experience
Essential criteria
- 12 year minimum post MBBS experience
- 6 years rheumatology experience
- Able to manage and treat patients in clinic independently
- Able to manage complexity in the care of patients as an autonomous practitioner
- Experience of working at registrar level within a large acute hospital
- IT skills
Desirable criteria
- 12 months experience in rheumatology or associated medicine in the UK
- Experience of working at consultant level
- Knowledge of hospital IT systems eg notis, careflow, nervecentre
Clinical skills and experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience in rheumatology
- Experience of managing referrals and on-calls
- Comprehensive knowledge of current issues in rheumatology
- Technical skills to assess patients
- Able to communicate effectively with patients, their families, other HCPs and management
- Uses NICE guidelines for rheumatology
Desirable criteria
- Training in communication skills
- Training in patient safety and human factors
