Job overview
The purpose of this role is to contribute to tackling inequalities in health by providing tobacco treatment and harm reduction advice and promoting and supporting inpatients with varying degrees of mental illness to stop smoking or remain Smokefree whilst in hospital
They will be required to work flexibly, working across inpatient hospital sites and with the community Smokefree team alongside developing direct working relationships with community stop smoking services
Please note that this post does not meet the pay or skill level required for a Skilled worker visa
Successful applicants with no prior NHS experience would normally be placed at the
bottom of the band in line with Agenda for Change. This salary is below the minimum
salary required for sponsorship for a Skilled Worker / Health & Care visa. In these
circumstances the Trust would not, therefore, be able to sponsor for a Skilled Worker/Health & Care visa

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.
You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide tobacco treatment advice and harm reduction support to individuals and groups of people who require assistance to reduce their harm from tobacco or for temporary abstinence whilst in hospital.
Use existing systems in place for identifying patients who smoke and ensure that they receive timely interventions to support them to be smokefree or to commence a harm reduction programme.
Provide advice and support to ward staff to assist in the implementation of the Smokefree policy within inpatient mental health units, reinforcing the training provided to inpatient teams.
Refer patients who want to stop smoking or commence a harm reduction pathway to community specialist stop smoking services upon discharge.
To liaise with the community Smokefree team for patients who have planned hospital admissions.
Identify and support ward smoke free champions to promote the smoke free message through their day to day work.
Organise and facilitate promotional events on an occasional basis
Raise the profile of smoking cessation across Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust inpatient mental health units.
Ensure that Smokefree documentation is kept up to date.
A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience.
Desirable criteria
- NCSCT certified stop smoking advisor
- NCSCT Very brief advice (VBA) on smoking

- NCSCT Very brief advice - Smoking for pregnant women

Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of delivering healthcare, or specialist health advice to patients and the public.
- Able to use own initiative within agreed protocols.
- Ability to work as an effective team member.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of delivering smoking cessation interventions including tobacco treatment support and harm reduction programmes to staff and patients.
- Experience of working in NHS secondary care
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and understanding of the NHS.
- Understanding of the key determinants of health and means of influencing these to reduce health inequalities.
- Understanding of factors contributing to health inequalities.
Desirable criteria
- Specialist knowledge relating to tobacco control and tobacco dependency treatment.
