Job overview

Are you a dynamic and compassionate nurse looking to make a real difference in cancer diagnostics? We are seeking a highly motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Upper GI Triage Assessment Team at King’s Mill Hospital.

About the Role:

As a key member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), you will provide expert clinical support and guidance to patients referred to the Upper GI triage service. You will play a vital role in shaping and delivering the patient pathway, ensuring timely and effective care in line with Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) and Referral to Treatment (RTT) targets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver specialist nursing advice to patients and colleagues across the diagnostic pathway.
  • Use advanced clinical assessment and communication skills to support patients and ensure all relevant information is available to the MDT.
  • Interpret clinical investigations and determine appropriate next steps, including discharge, GP referral, or escalation to specialist services.
  • Support the implementation of evidence-based diagnostic protocols, including Straight to Test (STT) pathways.
  • Collaborate with professionals across primary, secondary, and tertiary care to ensure seamless patient care.

Knowledge Requirements and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st level Registered Nurse
  • Significant relevant post registration experience in cancer/surgical/endoscopy nursing.
  • Evidence of teaching experience, either formally or in informal settings
  • Evidence of recent continuous personal and professional development
Desirable criteria
  • First level degree in related subject
  • Evidence of Masters Level learning or willing to work towards relevant Masters level studies.
  • UGI disease (including cancer), endoscopy and/ or surgical nursing experience.

Experience

  • Knowledge of NHS operational and strategic issues and their impact on upper GI services
  • Understanding and knowledge of common gastroenterology and symptoms/ conditions/ disease processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of primary care referral processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of UGI cancer pathways including 2ww and 18ww routes
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of diagnostic pathways for suspected UGI Cancer
  • Knowledge of Endoscopy & CTC procedures and bowel preparation
  • Knowledge of MDT working
Desirable criteria
