Job overview

The aim of the Clinical Development Fellow Programme is to either support overseas doctors with their transition into the NHS or for NHS experienced doctors to further develop a portfolio of evidence within medical specialties.

All doctors will be given a full medical education programme. This will be tailored and matched to each doctor’s training and career progression needs. The programme will be under full programme management of Training Programme Director and other senior clinicians and under the direct authority of the Chief Medical Officer.

Clinical Fellows will have the opportunity to sit their Royal College Examinations, which they must self-fund. At the end of the programme, all Clinical Fellows will have a full portfolio of evidence of clinical experience, appraisal and assessment and, if they chose to take them, Royal College exams.

Support Available

·       Certificate of sponsorship where required

·       Dedicated Training Programme Director for the Clinical Fellow Development Programme, Mr Irfan Akhtar, to offer advice and support

·       Assigned an Educational Supervisor who will support you throughout your time on the programme

·       Access to the Horus or E-portfolio systems - as decided in agreement with your assigned Educational Supervisor

·       Dedicated HR support from the Medical Workforce Team

·       Specific training sessions arranged to cover topics relevant doctors at this stage in their career

·       Study leave allocation – 10 days plus £600.00 per year

·       Support to pursue Royal College Membership examinations

·       Vast clinical experience in a range of medical specialties with supportive consultant supervision

·       The opportunity to attend the F2/CMT teaching, grand round and departmental specific teaching

·       The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is supported and encouraged by the Trust

·       Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) which will include a 360° appraisal and Personal Development Plan

·       Opportunity to actively participate in teaching

·       Dedicated Clinical Fellow Forums chaired by Clinical Fellows to support you in your role

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

Job Description General Requirements

·        To agree a contract of employment

·        To comply with all GMC regulations such as laid out in “Good Medical Practice”

·        To observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trust’s

·        Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters

·        To take responsibility for your own Health & Safety complying with any safe working arrangements, policies and procedures which are in place

·        To comply with all Trust requirements of appraisal, assessment and of the proposed medical training programme as stipulated by the programme leads

·        To compete Trust general and local induction

·        To work appropriately and effectively within your clinical team within the limits of your competency under clinical and educational supervision

·        In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, and commensurate with your grade, to play a full part in the supervision and support of other members of your team including more junior medical staff

·        In conjunction with colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department

·        In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met and to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.

·        To accept a duty to other staff and patients to ensure that any risks, incidents and hazards are reported and managed appropriately

·        In conjunction with colleagues, to play a full part in the rota for the department and to provide cover for colleagues in respect of periods of leave and, under agreed circumstances, to be available to provide emergency cover

·        To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary

·        Any other duties as agreed to be appropriate

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 3 years’ post qualification experience
  • At least 2 years’ post qualification experience in a general medicine or acute medicine setting
  • NHS experience
Desirable criteria
  • Up to date ALS or ATLS Certificate
  • Attainment of the UK Foundation Programme or an equivalent level of experience

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • To understand the principles of audit and research
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in audit and / or research

Other

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
  • Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit
