Applications are invited to apply for the above substantive consultant post in the Department of Neurosurgery based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford.
The successful applicant will join a team of currently 13 substantive Adult and 4 Paediatric Neurosurgery Consultants. The focus of the post will be the management of Emergency and Elective Oncological Neurosurgical patients. Appropriate administrative support will be provided for this post.
The Neurological Surgery Department has Academic and Clinical Training programmes. The applicant will be involved in training Specialist Registrars and Neuro-oncology Fellows (in a Royal College of Surgeons of England accredited Fellowship). Close clinical ties with our Paediatric Neurosurgery colleagues exist, and teaching/audit is done jointly with the Paediatric Neurosurgery service.
Applicants must hold full registration and licence to practice with the GMC, and must be on the GMC Specialist Register via Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview), or CESR/Portfolio pathway, or alternative routes to specialist registration. Applicants should have subspeciality fellowship level training in Oncological Neurosurgery.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will take part in a 1:12 non-resident on call rota with prospective cover, and when on call will be required to be within ten miles by road from the John Radcliffe Hospital.
The postholder’s duties will be to provide inpatient and outpatient care for neurosurgical patients both emergency and elective, and subspecialty neuro-oncology patients. Close working relationships with other members of the neurosciences team will be necessary. This includes all members of the neuro-oncology MDT – radiologists, oncologists, and Specialist Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
The post-holder will have equal access to clinics, theatres, junior doctor and administrative support and office space.

Qualifications/Training
Essential criteria
- GMC Specialist register in neurosurgery, or within 6 months of obtaining this
Desirable criteria
- Higher medical degree
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive training and experience in general adult neurosurgery. Fellowship (s) in Oncological Neurosurgery.
- Evidence of ability to make independent decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
- Experience in awake craniotomies, endoscopy, tractography and intra-operative monitoring
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience at Consultant Neurosurgeon level
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Ability to lead a team of professionals
- Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
- Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training
- Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to Clinical Governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
