Job overview

We are recruiting for clinicians who are ready to embark on a new and exciting role as trainee Systemic Family Practitioner (SFP) therapists within CAMHS. This is a great opportunity to receive excellent systemic training whilst putting new skills into practice within a clinical team with robust supervision. 

The successful candidates will be working as SFP trainees within one of the CAMHS community teams for the duration of the one-year course and would split their time between training and carrying out clinical work.  After successful completion of the course the fixed term training contract will end, however applicants would be encouraged to apply for any vacant posts within the service.   

The course you will be completing at the University of Exeter and is the equivalent of year one (introduction) and year two (intermediate) in systemic practice, making you eligible to apply to undertake years 3 and 4 in family and systemic therapy.  Which would then make you a qualified family and systemic psychotherapist.

To apply, you must meet the criteria for SFP training and also have a recognised professional background in mental health or related areas. If you do not have a Core Profession, you must complete a portfolio of evidence to show that you have equivalent training and experience. 

Prior to this interview, you should have completed your KSA. You will be asked for a copy of you self-statement for KSA criterion 4 in the interview. 

Main duties of the job

The clinical component of the role is working three days Monday- Wednesday in CAMHS, applying systemic skills to individual,  parental and family sessions or consultations with the support/supervision of Family Therapists. The post-holders will work within  multi-disciplinary teams to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate high-quality evidence-based systemic interventions for referred young people.  

The post holders will undertake a post graduate training programme for this role and must show academic ability to fulfil this intensive training. The post holders will attend all university based taught and self-study days required by the education provider, as specified within the agreed national curriculum and complete essays, case studies, a portfolio and present taped clinical work for supervision. Generally the academic component is two days at University per week Thursday and Fridays.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Hold an appropriate caseload and undertake key work, offering evidence based interventions to minimise waiting times
  • Provide specialist CAMHS assessment and therapy to children, adolescents and their families who have complex psychological emotional and mental health difficulties
  • Undertake risk assessments
  • Assess for suitability for treatment under CYP-IAPT models, for which training is provided
