Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust provides a regional service for vitreoretinal surgery for a catchment population of 1 million patients, caring for both children and adults. The full range of vitreoretinal conditions are treated, in addition to novel therapies, including gene therapy, subretinal electronic implants, robotic surgery, and Paediatric vitreoretinal surgery.
In addition, we have a comprehensive range of medical retina services, covering complex macular disease clinics, a focus on OCT training /teaching as well as retinovascular diseases and genetics.
As a major international ophthalmic research unit, we strongly encourage research and service development projects. Here at Oxford, we participate and lead in clinical trials supported by a dedicated clinical trials unit for Ophthalmology. This department runs studies in macular telangectasia, gene therapy for retinal genetic diseases and uveitis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
The postholder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust, such as the Horton Hospital in Banbury.
Teaching/Research/Audit
Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programs for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The Oxford Eye Hospital is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in research, particularly in neonatal vitreoretinal surgery, gene therapy, electronic retinal implants and imaging. Candidates would be expected to engage in some research activity while in post. Additional funding to attend conferences will be provided if Oxford-based research is being presented, for instance, at Euretina or ARVO.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC with licence to practice
- General training in ophthalmology to specialist level with some sub-specialty experience
- Medical degree
Desirable criteria
- CCT, CESR or equivalent. Higher degree
- FRCOphth/Part III/MRCOphth
Experience
Essential criteria
- • Demonstrate ability to conduct clinical and operative care in ophthalmology
- • Higher specialist training in ophthalmology or equivalent
Skills
Essential criteria
- • Ability to self motivate and be involved in teaching and training
- • Ability to work independently
- • Ability to organize and manage clinical workload
- • To undertake effectively the role of clinical fellow in a large teaching hospital
- • Good personal and interpersonal skills
- • Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
- • Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels skills should be highly developed.
