Job overview

We are delighted to advertise a twelve-month clinical Fellowship in Anaesthesia for Cancer Surgery and Transplant Anaesthesia. This post is an exciting opportunity for a post-CCT anaesthetist or a senior anaesthetic registrar to join our team and develop their role as an anaesthetist with an interest in transplant anaesthesia. We pride ourselves in training excellence and received excellent feedback from our previous fellow.

 The majority of our services are on the Churchill site in the Oxford Cancer and Haematology Centre but patients are treated at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the West Wing.

A wide range of surgical expertise is available in the Oxford Cancer and Haematology Centre. Specialist surgery is carried out by the teams responsible for management of the following cancer types:

·      Breast

·      Gynaecological

·      Upper gastrointestinal (including oesophagus and stomach)

·      Hepatopancreatobiliary (including liver, pancreas, gallbladder)

·      Lower gastrointestinal (including colon and rectum)

·      Head and neck

·      Thyroid and endocrine cancers

·      Urological (including bladder and prostate)

Main duties of the job

The post-holder’s duties will cover in and out-of-hours duties across any of the OUH sites.

Opportunities for teaching, training and research will be available within the fellowship programme and will be agreed prior to commencement of the fellowship.

The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. 

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. 

The post-holder will assume a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of his/her department. Office accommodation and secretarial support is available for this post.

Essential criteria
  • GMC Registration

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • FRCA or equivalent.
  • On GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthetics; OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Medical Degree ATLS, ALS, MOET

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Specialist training in Anaesthesia and experience in multidisciplinary team working in complex cases.
  • Interest in research
  • Ability to make decisions at ST7 level
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Lower and Upper GI, HPB, Urology, Gynae-oncology, and Transplant Anaesthesia
  • Publications/presentations
  • Management of complex rotas

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist training in Anaesthesia and experience in onco-anaesthesia and transplant anaesthesia
  • Evidence of team leadership skills to be able to undertake effectively the role of a Fellow, in a large multi-site teaching hospital
  • Organisational skills to be able to undertake effectively, the role of a Fellow within a large multi-site teaching hospital.
  • Management training and experience Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed.
  • Experience of teaching medical, nursing and PAM, undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Experience of routine clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government’s agenda for modernisation
  • Computing skills: ability to use a word processor, spreadsheet programme and web browser
  • Flexible approach to problem solving
  • Experience in perioperative medicine-based teaching
  • Willingness to conduct and/or supervise audit
