Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Clinical Psychologist to join the Children’s Psychological Medicine team at the Children’s Hospital, Oxford based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The successful applicant will support the delivery of psychological services across a number of specialties as part of a wider Multi Disciplinary Team to deliver holistic, high-quality, evidence-based, family-centred care.
The Children’s Psychological Medicine team comprises psychologists, psychiatrists and a family therapist, with opportunities for consultation and support. The department operates an inpatient rota for the Children’s Hospital and supports flexible working and monthly CPD, with funding for additional training.
Main duties of the job
• Provide a highly specialised paediatric clinical psychology service, including assessment, intervention, consultation, supervision, teaching, research and audit and support the in-hours psychologist-of-the-week service on the wards; participate in the inpatient psychology rota.
• Contribute to MDT meetings; provide psychologically informed formulations to guide care plans; develop and facilitate group interventions where appropriate.
• Work autonomously within professional guidelines, maintaining high standards of clinical governance and documentation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Receive and communicate highly complex and sensitive information; undertake comprehensive assessments integrating interviews, psychometrics, observation and collateral information.
• Develop and deliver specialist, evidence-based interventions (individual, family, group), continually refining formulations and treatment plans.
• Undertake specialist risk assessment and management (including self-harm/suicide/abuse) and advise MDT colleagues on psychological aspects of risk.
• Provide consultation and psychologically informed advice to MDT colleagues to ensure a consistent framework of care across pathways.
• Provide clinical supervision to junior/assistant psychologists and placements for doctoral trainees; contribute to teaching and training.
• Lead/participate in audit, service evaluation and clinically grounded research to inform service development across General Paediatrics and Gastroenterology.
• Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping and data monitoring; contribute to policy implementation and service development as a senior clinician.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent
- Eligible for chartered status as a clinical psychologist
- HCPC Registration as Practitioner Psychologist
- Additional specialist therapeutic training/qualification
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of post qualification training to support work within a neonatal context
- Pre-or post qualification training in research methodology
- Further training in staff support/supervision
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of clinical work with infants, children, young people and families experiencing acute or chronic illness and life limiting conditions
- Experience of working across the lifespan with a wide variety of client groups and across the full range of clinical severity
- Experience of cognitive assessment and formulation
- Experience of working with parents who may be dealing with a complex range of issues including though not restricted to significant concerns for their child, anxiety and/or adjustment issues as well as possible health concerns of their own.
- Experience of clinical work within an acute hospital or paediatric setting
- Further post-training supervised clinical practice, with a very high degree of autonomy in keeping with the job requirements
- Experience of delivering highly skilled assessments. Interventions, follow-up and data monitoring utilizing at least two therapeutic models
Desirable criteria
- Post qualification experience working with children presenting with a range of health and developmental difficulties
- Experience of supervising others (non-psychologists, assistants, trainees)
- Post-doctoral experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team representing the psychological needs of children and young people and sharing expert formulations to inform team practice.
- Experience of working with trauma and/or bereavement
Knowledge and Skills

- Competence in assessing and managing risk
- Ability to work with highly distressed adults, adolescents and family members
- Experience in individual therapy, work with families and group work
- Ability to undertake clinical and service related research or audit consistent with the needs of the department and in keeping with the job requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and through written work
- Competence in CBT and other psychotherapies
- Ability to assess and formulate cases incorporating a broad range of models
- Up to date knowledge of the theory and practice of specialized psychological therapies as applied in a clinical health setting
