Job overview

The post-holder’s duties as a Consultant in Obstetric Medicine will primarily be in the Women’s Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital. However, there may be clinic sessions at other units in the region. The Maternal Medicine Service at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a mixed secondary and tertiary service to Oxfordshire and a tertiary service as the Maternal Medicine Centre for the Thames Valley Maternal Medicine Network covering Buckinghamshire, East and West Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire and adjacent parts of Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, total population approaching 3 million. There are approximately 7500 births per year throughout the Trust and approximately 40000 births per year in the Thames Valley Network footprint.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder’s duties as a Consultant in Obstetric Medicine will primarily be in the Women’s Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital. However, there may be clinic sessions at other units in the region. The Maternal Medicine Service at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a mixed secondary and tertiary service to Oxfordshire and a tertiary service as the Maternal Medicine Centre for the Thames Valley Maternal Medicine Network covering Buckinghamshire, East and West Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire and adjacent parts of Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, total population approaching 3 million. There are approximately 7500 births per year throughout the Trust and approximately 40000 births per year in the Thames Valley Network footprint.

This is a less than full time 4 PA post (0.4 WTE).

 

The duties include multi-disciplinary antenatal and post-natal clinics, pre-conception clinic for women with medical problems and management of maternal medicine inpatients.

The post-holder will have use of a desk in an office in Maternity alongside colleagues in the department. The office equipped with a personal computer with intranet access and Wi-Fi. There will be identified secretarial support accordingly.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Obstetric Medicine

Teaching/Research

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching hospital, and the post- holder will be required to teach and examine clinical students.

It is anticipated that the post-holder will contribute to both department’s research activities, and collaboration with clinicians and scientists in the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health (NDWRH) is encouraged.

The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. It is anticipated that the post-holder will be awarded the title of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the University of Oxford and affiliation to NDWRH for contribution to teaching clinical students and supervising postgraduate research.

Teaching in obstetric medicine is expected as the Trust is an accredited obstetric medicine training centre. There is an obstetric medicine registrar, two RCOG subspeciality registrars and the department offers training for the special skills module in obstetric medicine for acute medicine resident doctors. Opportunities exist to develop academic interests also.

 

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

 

Personal and Professional Development

OUHFT supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the Royal College of Physician and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

 

Revalidation

The Trust has the required arrangements in place for appraisal as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and ensures that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a choice of trained appraiser and are supported while going through the revalidation process.

 

Workload

The Maternal Medicine department supports the OUH as secondary care obstetric unit where approximately 7,500 women give birth per year. In addition, the department provides tertiary referral care for 40,000 pregnant women within the Thames Valley network. There are approximately 45 new patients’ appointments per week and 40 follow up appointments. There are usually approximately 15 inpatients.

Emergency cover

The appointee will help to support the care of the Maternal Medicine inpatients together with two other obstetric physicians and 5 consultant obstetricians with expertise in Maternal Medicine. There are usually 2 RCOG subspecialty trainees in Maternal and Fetal medicine. There is a 24/7 telephone advice on call for maternal medicine for the region and the post holder will be expected to contribute to this 1 in 6, consultant of the week.

Mentoring

The newly appointed consultant will be mentored by an experienced consultant in Maternal Medicine.

Management

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
