Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH), working with the Adult Sleep and Ventilation and General Respiratory teams across the Churchill Hospital and Horton Hospital sites based in in Oxford and Banbury respectively.
Prior dedicated experience working in a tertiary sleep and ventilation service is not a prerequisite, and speciality training within the role can be provided as needed.
The successful applicant will join two consultants in the Adult Sleep and Ventilation Service, a regional centre with a world-class clinical and academic reputation, delivering excellence in care locally and to neighbouring counties, working in partnership with a wide OUH MDT across primary and secondary care. The team is embracing innovation to meet growing demand (replacement role).
They will join two consultants in Respiratory medicine providing in-patient care on a Respiratory ward with high-care beds at the Horton site, and contributing to a respiratory out-patient and referral service. This new service is helping to address healthcare inequality and bring specialist services to the Horton site.

Main duties of the job
The post holder’s duties are based across the OUH sites, predominantly at the Churchill and Horton sites. There are a total of 10 PAs comprising a mix of 8.5 clinical PAs and 1.5 supporting PA s.
Speciality work comprises respiratory sleep and ventilation, including diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnoea, hypoventilation and support of patients with respiratory muscle weakness.
The appointee will deliver in-patient care at the Horton Hospital within the Oak general ward and high-care unit, which is predominantly respiratory (approximately 3 months/ year).
There is a contribution to general respiratory clinics. On call commitment for acute general medicine will be at the Horton site.
It is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Teaching/Research
Oxford Radcliffe University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of every day clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
Clinical Governance, Audit and QI
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. The post holder will be expected to participate in regular Appraisal and Revalidation processes. The post holder will be allocated a mentor.
Management
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
Risk Management
The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment.
Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility.
Staff should be familiar with the

Responsibilities for Health & Safety
The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. This will be supported by the provision of training and specialist advice where required.
Infection Control
Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.
All staff employed by the ORH Trust have the following key responsibilities:
- Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the patient’s surroundings.
- Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
- Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.

Qualifications/Training
Essential criteria
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCT in Respiratory Medicine or registration on GMC Specialist register in Respiratory Medicine; CCT in GIM or registration on GMC Specialist register in GIM; OR within six months of achieving CCTs at the time of interview.
Desirable criteria
- MD or PhD
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Excellent leadership skills to function as a consultant in the specialty
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to function as a consultant in a large teaching hospital
- Track record of ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
- Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed
- Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
- Clear understanding of current clinical governance structures and evidence of active contributions to clinical governance during specialty training. Commitment to continuing professional development. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities
- Evidence of active interest and participation in research
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of leadership in research, professional bodies, or other spheres
- Evidence of organisational skills in research, professional bodies or other spheres

- Experience of supervising junior researchers
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in diagnosis and management of patients with sleep related breathing disorders, hypoventilation and respiratory muscle weakness.
- General respiratory outpatient experience.
- Experience in managing respiratory and general medical inpatients.
- Experience of bronchoscopy and care of acute respiratory in-patients. Level 1 TUS
- Experience of diagnosis and care of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.
- Ability to make decisions at consultant level.
Desirable criteria
- Higher Sleep and Ventilation training at clinical fellow or consultant level
- Independence in reporting sleep studies.
- Critical care experience.
- Experience managing patients with ventilatory failure or weak cough secondary to neuro-muscular disorders.
Other Requirements

- Full GMC Registration
- Ability to travel to the Hospital sites.
