We, the Crisis and Home Treatment Service (CAHTS), are embedded within the Bath, North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW) Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), are looking for a Mental Health Practitioner to join us.

We work closely alongside and the Getting More Help Teams in supporting children, young people (CYP) and their families experiencing complex mental health needs.

Our CYP might be at risk of inpatient hospital admission or transitioning out of inpatient care; our role is to provide intensive, short-term support within the community. No two days are the same, with plenty of variety in this role and lots of opportunities for learning.

We can offer bespoke training, including specialised Crisis training as well as access to our in-house Master's Programme or our "Flyer" programme aimed at newly qualified practitioners. 

We can also offer this as a developmental role for a newly qualified practitioner, or a support you as a registered practitioner returning to practice after a break.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake a lead role for children and young people open to the team and work collaboratively with young people, their families and GMH Keyworker in addition to a wider care team in the context of their environment. 
  • Providing effective assessment, planning and review of care needs using the CPA process.
  • Establishing, maintaining and ending purposeful, therapeutic relationships with children and young people experiencing severe mental health difficulties. Practice will be creative and underpinned by specialist knowledge of, and skills in, evidence based and psychosocial interventions.
  • Supporting the delivery of the Liaison Service by working closely with the CAMHS Liaison Practitioners.
    Supporting the delivery of the Community Model for Eating Disorders, including mealtime supports within the home or school. 
  • Using knowledge of psychological therapies, for example CBT, DBT and Solution Focused approaches.
  • Providing time-limited intervention, often during periods of increased need related to crisis or deterioration in mental health in order to provide intensive community support as an alternative to inpatient care. Identifying appropriate discharge goals and working positively with risk using own professional judgment and team processes.

The teams predominantly operates within core hours Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm, and 10am – 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Relevant professional mental health qualification - Mental Health Nurse/Learning Disability Nurse/Occupational Therapist/Social Worker/Clinical Psychologist
  • Current registration with relevant professional body – NMC, HCPC
Desirable criteria
  • Training in supervision and appraisal

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of mental health and community care legislation and policy
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding policy and procedures
  • Knowledge of Recovery Focused Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of evidence-based interventions i.e., motivational interviewing, solution focused therapy and a psychological therapy (i.e., CBT/DBT)
  • Knowledge and experience of Child and Adult Protection work

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding and experience of working with children and young people/adults with a wide range of mental health needs
  • Experience of working with families, carers and significant others
  • Ability to carry out assessments and psycho-social interventions
