Job overview

The Immunisation Coordinator is the lead nurse in Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) for matters regarding immunisation. The successful applicant will have a major role in training, service delivery, clinical advice and audit. The post holder will be expected to work in partnership with Public Health for immunisations. A key part of the role is to support the local delivery plan to achieve the Welsh Government immunisation targets.

Main duties of the job

Provide leadership to improve immunisation services locally. Influence and develop evidence-based standards of care for the immunisation service. Take all opportunities to promote the National Vaccination and Immunisation Programme Demonstrate effective communication locally using available resources and ensuring full documentation. Develop and maintain professional networks and relationships with colleagues in Primary and Secondary Care, Public Health and Health Protection across the area.  Oversee the standard of all relevant material in relation to vaccination and immunisation and advise in appropriate dissemination methods.  Receive data and key reports on immunisation uptake that may be complex and sensitive.  To liaise on issues of quality and safety with the Quality & Safety Unit

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Maintain the specialist practice function within PTHB the post holder will be responsible for:

  • Leading delivery of the national immunisation training programme for health care professionals and support workers in PTHB
  • Be influential within the organization in matters relating to immunisation
  • Provide detailed advice to other specialist and non-specialist on immunisation matters
  • Develop, support and maintain a network of immunisation mentors to deliver competency skills
  • Promote up to date evidence-based practice regarding immunisation issues throughout PTHB
  • Identify training needs in immunisation services and play a key lead role in ensuring the provision and delivery of training
  • Work closely with the training department to set up a data base of staff who vaccinate and develop a recall system for updates, ensuring that opportunities are provided for competencies to be maintained
  • Participate in national immunisation conferences
  • Deliver training sessions and presentations to groups of varying sizes
  • Develop collaborative links with Universities and other appropriate educational establishments to develop new and innovative immunisation training programmes within PTHB

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Training skills and qualification
  • Demonstrate competency in dealing with vaccination and immunisation
  • Knowledge of Public Heath policy/strategies for immunisation and wider NHS knowledge and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Master degree level
  • Nurse prescribing
  • Level three in Nursing with specialist practitioner qualification in Practice Nursing, Health visiting

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in immunisation
  • Significant post registration nursing
  • Experience or working within the community
  • Experience of teaching and presentations to a range of levels
  • Experience of research and audit
  • Experience of interagency work

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office packages including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint/Teams ECDL training modules passed
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills; able to present at meetings where specialist information / knowledge is exchanged and hold an audience and to exchange important dialogue
  • Ability to develop and implement action plans within often tight timescales
  • An ability to facilitate change
  • Understanding of key agencies involved in immunisation and vaccination services
  • Ability to operate with autonomous practice
