Job overview
We are recruiting for a Band 2 Paediatric Phlebotomist working with children from 1 year old to 18 years old. The role is based in a clinic working 08.30-16.30 on Wednesday's and Thursday's.
The post holder will provide a dedicated Paediatric Phlebotomy for a specified group of children referred by both the Paediatricians and GP’s across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
The post holder will be required to carry out phlebotomy skills under both direct and indirect supervision of a senior paediatric phlebotomist and the Community Children’s Nursing (CCN) Team, in a community clinic setting.
Main duties of the job
- To meet and greet all parents, carers children and young people and ensure they feel welcome in clinic.
- To receive referral (for a specified group of children) and arrange appointments/clinics.
- To deliver direct patient care in designated community clinics undertaking children’s blood tests.
- Carry out venepuncture, safely store the sample and transport it to the lab ensuring the Doctors name for reporting back to is clearly marked on the request form.
- To be competent at performing venepuncture in children whilst providing a safe environment for all clients and children, who attend clinics at Trust premises for assessment, treatment and intervention.
- To initiate and supervise play activities and distraction as appropriate to the activity as directed by the Community Paediatrician or CCN Team Leader.
- To prepare the clinic when required and return it to the correct set up at the end as required.
- To be responsible for cleaning toys/equipment and stocking up literature used in the clinics
- To maintain stock levels and ordering for the clinics; ensuring consumables are safely stored.

Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Hold or willingness to undertake a recognised phlebotomy training module /course.
- A good standard of education e.g GCSEs A-C or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Packages.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working in a health care setting and /or delivering phlebotomy services.
- Consolidated experience of working within a Health and Social Care setting.
- Experience of working with children with health needs and awareness of children with additional difficulties.
- Evidence of being able to work independently and with resources using own initiative as required.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Good Verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates ability to liaise and work with other professions and agencies.
- Ability to analyse clinical situations and make appropriate judgements & decisions.
- Professional and helpful telephone manner.
