Job overview

This is a 6 month (with potential for extension by a further 6 months in line with NHS locum consultant appointment guidelines) Locum Consultant post, full time, with 10 programmed activities per week. . The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi- disciplinary team providing and developing care for orthopaedic patients. The individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department.

The post will be primarily based at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, an NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

You will perform a range of orthopaedic procedures on patients referred to the Hospital. You will be treating NHS referred to the hospital, working in accordance with hospital protocols and working practices.  

 As well as being able to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in elective orthopaedic procedures from your substantive experience, you will required to perform surgical procedures on patients referred to the hospital, working in accordance with hospital protocols and working practices. In addition, you may be required to carry out other operations that are within your range of expertise, and are contracted to the hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, high quality foot and ankle service at the Trust

Deliver clinical sessions in out-patients and theatres

Assessment, investigation and diagnosis of all foot and ankle conditions in out-patients

Hallux valgus surgery

Lesser toe surgeries

Fusions (1st MTPJ, midfoot, hindfoot)

Ankle arthroscopy

Ankle ligament reconstruction

Total ankle replacement

Achilles tendon repair (minimally-invasive)

Achilles tendon debridement / reattachment

Foot and ankle trauma

Person specification

Registration and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC and entered onto the Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedics (at the time of interview)
  • ATLS Provider

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience in managing trauma and foot and ankle surgeries
  • Log book demonstrates sufficient experience in foot and ankle surgeries
  • Fellowship in foot and ankle surgery

Other

Essential criteria
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates ability to work well in a team
  • Understanding of clinical governance
