Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Be accountable and responsible for maintaining own nursing practice and take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.

To be responsible for the delivery of safe, quality patient centered care within the Department

Maintaining own specialist knowledge and clinical skills (especially within the field of, Orthopaedic surgical, neurology, metabolic and rheumatology clinics/ services, relevant orthopaedic day case surgical procedures & plaster room.

 Participating in direct patient care and uphold evidence of
continuing education standards as required by the NMC.

 The post holder must be able to demonstrate extremely developed dexterous skills during clinical practice and the capability to manage periods of moderate physical effort during the shift worked.

Assist the Departmental manager in the provision of clinical and professional advice, expertise, and support, developing practice and monitoring performance.

Keep abreast of current political issues within the NHS, and future nursing trends.

To provide leadership to all staff, promoting a culture of positive and effective teamwork., and openness

Assess care required, requesting medical input as necessary and devising appropriate care programmes for the patient, implementing care , admitting patients, and evaluating care during their visit to the department .

Assess, treat, and evaluate surgical / trauma & chronic wounds, alongside the multidisciplinary team, using appropriate evidence-based practice, daily.

To provide a high standard of nursing care based on the assessment of care needs - in consultation with the patient, their relatives, and the multidisciplinary team.

To continuously evaluate the quality of care given, and regularly re-assess the needs of the patient, in consultation with the patient, other carers and the multidisciplinary team to effect change required to achieve planned goals.

Liaise with other professionals to ensure cohesive patient care.

Ensure a patient / client-focused approach to care, ensuring due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of the patient family, carers, and staff.

Ensure due regard is given to the safety of patients’ belongings.

Providing and receiving complex or sensitive information about patients, dealing with confrontation where you will be able to reassure, calm and defuse difficult

Advise on issues within own scope of practice relating to health promotion 

To identify the learning needs of the patient, relatives, and staff, and in consultation with the department team, will plan and implement 

Facilitate and maintain patient records to ensure information is accurate and up to date for future reference and complies with the Data Protection Act, NMC Patient Record Keeping Guidelines.

Provide support and information to patients, relatives/carers in all aspect of treatment in the Outpatient Department. 

Ensure that communication is effective, that the sending and receiving of information is conveyed and received in such a manner as to foster excellent relationships, between clinicians, allied health care professionals, patients, and relatives.

Maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, relatives /carers & inside and outside agencies. Provide relevant advice on issues relating to health promotion, maintaining confidentiality, and working closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Ensure that the established system of continuous communication is effective for the assessment and reporting of patient care and activity 

Provide and receive complex or sensitive information about patients, be able to deal will confrontation & be able to reassure, calm and defuse difficult situations.

Deal with anxious relatives / staff, providing support & liaising with appropriate support networks.

Enable the patient to cooperate with prescribed treatments and care required – through appropriate / effective communication / explanation

Communication with patients with special needs where the recognition and understanding of nonverbal communication essential, possibly daily.

Daily act as a resource for nursing and allied health care professionals in the delivery of care.

Respond to telephone enquiries, following an analysis / interpretation of the situation you will share your clinical judgment offering appropriate advice and referring to appropriate personnel. Maintaining a recording in appropriate place.

Disseminate information  to staff through handovers, team briefs, ward meetings and memos daily.

Attend meetings as directed and provide feedback /contribute to action plans/ provide information as appropriate.

To be able to manage time effectively, ensuring patients are ready for planned procedures and staff receive adequate breaks during the working day and finish at the appropriate time.

Ensure the safe delivery of medicines by the prescribed route adhering to national and Trust guidelines.

Undertake venepuncture and ECGs, when trained appropriately and to maintain / update clinical skills.

Assist the OPD team to ensure the department meets risk management standards, working with all health care professionals.

Frequent provision of patient care, which requires the use physical effort to roll, manoeuvre and stand patients. The use of department manual handling equipment / training is essential, to reduce physical strain and maintain safety of the patient. Annual manual handling training is mandatory. Staff member is responsible for the implementation of own safe manual handling activities.

Frequent handling of waste body fluids, ensuring correct disposal.

Participate in appraisal process, setting personal objectives for own professional development plan

Attend relevant training sessions which is pertinent to own clinical practice, to enhance knowledge and skill & maintain competencies

Develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with other Health Care Professionals in both hospital & community settings, through a high level of communication & interpersonal skills.

Manage clinic space & staffing effectively with  efficient use of resources and clinic/room requests appropriately working effectively & closely with the Access team

Being responsible for monitoring, organizing, and coordinating activities within the designated area when allocated as the Nurse in Charge /Team leader on a regular basis 

Manage the procedure / post procedure room team, as a team leader, participating as an active member of the scrub & circulating team.

Manage safe effective admission, preparation for procedure, post procedure recovery & discharge through the procedure room, including liaising with wider team about amendments or
changes to lists, informing all team members

Responsible for ensuring procedure room list runs smoothly & safely, involving cooperation of & communication with multidisciplinary team

Liaise with the Health Care Records / Access Team in organizing extra/changes to clinics that are required.

To be competent to prepare for, organize and visit /run peripheral clinics and work autonomously in these clinics

Responsible for documenting & monitoring safe use of all equipment & economic use of supplies. Manage levels of stock and equipment, using Oracle system to make purchases as an
Authorized signatory in the absence of the Departmental Manager or her deputy

In the absence of the Manager/Deputy will collect data required for monthly/ weekly monitoring, audits and communicate this information to the relevant manager or department.

Provide leadership & be a source of support for the nursing and wider outpatient services team, acting as a role model.

Facilitate and support others to deliver in-house training.

Conduct Individual Performance Review and wellbeing meetings of junior trained and untrained staff as directed by the Departmental Manager/Deputy in accordance with Trust policies.

With the support of the Department Manager / deputy, evaluate and implement new ideas and recommendations appropriate to the department

Ensure the department is staffed adequately with appropriate skill mix on each shift for each area

Participate in the orientation/induction of new staff to the department.

Act as a resource advisor for junior colleagues in the delivery of nursing care.

Provide adequate mentorship/training for untrained staff and students/visitors from other disciplines.

Participate in continuing assessment scheme for learners if applicable.

Ensure staff wear identity badges and adhere to uniform policy

Assist in the creation of a positive working atmosphere.

To deputize for the Departmental Manager/Department sister as and when necessary

Develop and maintain a working knowledge of  all  digital management systems used within the department.
