Job overview
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust are seeking Teaching Fellows in Anaesthetics to support undergraduate teaching across a range of clinical and non-clinical settings over a 12-month fixed term contract based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The post also attracts an on call commitment of 1 in 16.
Successful applicants will be enrolled in the Keele University Teacher the Teachers Course and will be funded to study for the Keele Post Graduate Certificate of Medical Education. Consideration will also be given for funding of other relevant educational courses.
Interviews for this post will be held on 12th February 2026 in person at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, and the post will commence on 6th August 2026.

Main duties of the job
- Deliver teaching to medical students in a variety of clinical settings (wards, ITU, theatres, outpatient clinics, assessment units) and non-clinical settings (seminar rooms, classrooms, clinical skills laboratories, lecture theatres)
- Contribute to the clinical and communication skills teaching across the curriculum, in collaboration with the Clinical Skills Lead and wider staff
- Teach both Year 4 and Year 5 students, tailoring delivery to their stage of training.
- Support and organisation of clinical skills training and critical care programme
- Coordinate medical student activities, liaising with clinical teachers, practice educator teams, and administrative staff
- Contribute to curriculum evaluation and development, ensuring high-quality teaching delivery
- Participate in student assessments, including mini-CEX, Direct Observation of Procedures (DOPs), case-based discussions, and OSCE examinations
- Undertake formal study in medical education to enhance teaching practice
- Maintain and develop clinical skills
- Engage fully with the Year 5 weekly teaching programme
- Provide cover for bedside teaching sessions when required
- To be responsible for managing and prioritising own workload and working flexibly within the team, to seek/respond to requests for support, advice and guidance to ensure team objectives are met

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will take part in various modes of assessment and appraisal. The post-holder will also have a significant role in the delivery of the new curricular components of Year 5 of the Keele University Medical School Curriculum. The post holder will support teaching in the “year spine” component of the fourth year of the curriculum, including ethics, drug administration and pain management.
The curriculum is in a continuous process of development, presenting other opportunities for training and participation in other varied teaching activities. These include problem-based learning, clinical and communication skills tuition, and use of advanced medical simulation (via use of SimMan 3G). Post holders will receive formal training in advanced medical simulation.

Essential criteria
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) Training
- Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) Training
- Registered practitioner with the Higher Education Academy (HEA)
- A National Training Number (NTN)
- An educational qualification
Entry Criteria
Essential criteria
- Full Registration and a licence to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- 2 years NHS Anaesthetics experience completed by August 2026
- Evidence of an appreciation of the principles of adult learning and approaches used in medical education
- Experience of teaching clinical students
Desirable criteria
- Resus Council Instructor
- Involvement with medical simulation
