Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, experienced and capable Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist, with an interest in career progression.
The successful applicant will be a suitably qualified and experienced HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist who may hold or be working towards an MSc.
This post in the Biochemistry Section at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
The role involves management and deployment of staff within the Blood Sciences laboratory. You will lead the Biochemistry section and will ensure that all aspects of the technical performance of that area are of the highest standard.
A Roche equipment refresh will be undertaken in the next few months
The department is an approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged.
Main duties of the job
- Assist the Head BMS and other senior grade staff in the management of the department’s sections.
- To manage and deploy staff within a section(s) of work assigned to you. To be familiar with the local application of all relevant Trust policies, e.g. health and safety, HR (personnel), and ensure that these policies are adhered to by yourself and the staff in your section.
- You may be required to deputise for the Deputy Head BMS in their absence and take direct responsibility for the department.
- You will provide cover for other senior specialist within your department.
- You will perform a range of senior specialist activities and provide highly specialist advice to clinicians and other service users.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Science or related subject
- Registered with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist
- MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline
Desirable criteria
- IBMS Certificate of Extended practice
- Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising members of staff
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the work undertaken in Pathology
- Experience of interaction with varied groups of people with differing levels of knowledge
- Experience of training laboratory staff
- Experience of guiding a student through an apprenticeship, IBMS registration portfolio and the Certificate of achievement
- Significant experience of quality control IQC/EQA troubleshooting
- Experience of analyser troubleshooting
- Excellent communication skills
Desirable criteria
- Excellent working knowledge of all aspects of Quality Management & ISO15189
- Knowledge of quality control and assurance
- Knowledge of Q-Pulse (Quality Management System) software
- Understanding of laboratory Health and Safety,
- Hands on experience with Roche Cobas analysers
- Knowledge of Laboratory IT Systems and Excel
