Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to support the Band 7 and team of nursing staff on Ward 25 within the Medicine Division. You will be an experienced RGN and be able to lead and assess the work of the nursing team building upon your own clinical and managerial experience. 

The successful candidate will be able to role model continuous professional behaviour and demonstrate through personal behaviour the core values of the Trust. 

The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting the band 7 with the continuous improvement of the department, effectively monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of care that are reflected by patient experience.  

The successful candidate must have a proven ability in supervising, managing and controlling the activities of a department in an efficient and effective manner. This will involve the assessment and implementation of appropriate care for new and current patients whilst ensuring adequate staffing levels are maintained and resources used appropriately

Showing commitment and direction to the team as a whole you will actively participate in the teaching, training and supervision of all grades of staff.  You will be required to be receptive to change, be dynamic and demonstrate active assistance and support to your more senior colleagues in the ongoing development of the department.

Main duties of the job

  • To function as a competent clinical practitioner within their designated clinical area. To deliver direct patient care whilst, co-ordinating and supporting other team members.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the delivery of clinical activities during their span of duty.  
  • To ensure that there is efficient and effective utilisation of resources to deliver optimum quality care to their client group. 
  • To deputise for the ward/ department  manager in his / her absence, driving forward evidence based practice and taking responsibility for the supervision of staff and the policies and practices that operate within their clinical area. 
  • To work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.

Ward 25 is undergoing  structural change and moving to Medicine Division. There will be 20 general medicine beds and 18 escalation beds.

Professional /technical Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional development/qualification relevant to area of speciality

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Recent post registration experience in the relevant speciality or equivalent.
  • High level clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Evidence of successfully co-ordinating, managing and leading the team on a day-to-day basis.
  • Teaching ability.
  • Experience in undertaking preceptor/mentor role.
  • Involvement in Nursing Audit and Research.
Desirable criteria
  • An awareness and understanding of policy and practice relevant to speciality
