We are currently looking for Healthcare Assistants to join our Discharge Lounge teams at both The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.  

The Discharge Lounge is a fast paced environment where patients wait for their discharge letters, medication and transport before leaving the hospital. The HCA role is heavily involved in the timely transferring of patients from the wards to the Discharge Lounge in order to create capacity and flow for our Emergency Departments. 

As a Healthcare Assistant in the Discharge Lounge, you play a role in supporting patients who are medically fit and waiting to be discharged from hospital. The role focuses on ensuring patient comfort, safety, and dignity during the discharge process , while working closely with the nursing team, porters, pharmacy, and transport services.

Main duties of the job

  • Transferring patients in a timely manner from wards to the Discharge Lounge to support patient flow.
  • Liaising with relatives and supporting the Nurse to provide updates on discharge progress.
  • To work as part of the ward/department team delivering excellent patient care.
  • Monitoring patients and performing basic health check
  • Serving meals and helping to feed patients
  • Provide support to patients to maintain their hygiene needs. This may include actions such as:
    • Bathing/washing
    • Mouth Care
  • Provide support to maintain their elimination needs. This may include actions such as:
    • Encouraging continence
    • Emptying urinary catheter bags
    • Mobilising to toilet or use of commode or bedpan
    • Maintaining hygiene needs after episodes of incontinence

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE in Maths and English grade 3-1 ( D-G) Functional Skills L1 or higher
Desirable criteria
  • GCSE in Maths and English grade 9-4 ( A – C) Functional Skills L2 or higher
  • Level 2 Diploma in clinical Healthcare support NVQ Level 2 in Care or demonstrate a commitment to work towards the diploma qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Can demonstrate an understanding, through personal statement and interview, of what is required within the role of a Health Care Assistant in the care setting
Desirable criteria
  • Previous hospital experience
  • Can describe the Trust Values and demonstrate how they put these in to practice within their caring role
  • Formal or informal care experience
