Medical Engineering Entry Level Technologist

NHS AfC: Band 4

Job overview

Medical Engineering provides a wide range of maintenance services to Shropshire and the surrounding regions.

To be successfully recruited into this roll, you will need technical skills and qualifications, as the technologist will require an understanding of inspections and test procedures relating to maintenance.

You will be expected to undertake routine servicing, acceptance checks and repairs on medical devices including hospital beds, mattresses, trollies and couches across the department’s portfolio for the lifetime of the devices i.e. commissioning through to disposal. As requested, the post holder will be required to provide cover in instances of annual leave and sickness for either site within the organisation.

Medical Engineering Services (MES), also service external contracts including some private customers.

The department is split between two main sites (The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford) with a general maintenance team based at each site; we are looking to recruit two Entry Level Technologists - one based at Shrewsbury and one based at Telford.

The department also is responsible for service and maintenance support for the Renal Dialysis service in Shropshire, which includes three Renal Units plus a cohort of home patients.

  • You will also go on training to learn new skills and keep up to date with changes in technology.

Working for our organisation

Our Poppy’s Promise Commitment

We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team —  clinical or non-clinical — plays a vital role in ensuring that patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times.

We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words, but through their actions: by listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising  individual needs, feelings, and circumstances of those in our care.

Effective communication is central to safe and high-quality healthcare. We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explain information in a  meaningful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding.

By joining our team, you are committing to uphold these values — ensuring that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction, every day.
