COVID-19 Vacancy Trainee Ophthalmic Assistants - Ophthalmology Outpatients

NHS AfC: Band 2

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Ophthalmology Department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a Band 2 Trainee Ophthalmic Assistant. Following successful completion of a range of ophthalmic competencies there will be an automatic progression to a Band 3 Ophthalmic Assistant post.

There will be 2 permanent posts available - a 28.5 hour post & a 37.5 hour post. This will be over 3 or 4 variable days Monday - Friday with rotational weekends.

We are looking for 2 caring and motivated individuals who have a genuine interest in Ophthalmology. The successful candidates must have good communication skills and be able to work well as part of a friendly team in a busy and dynamic environment. In return, the post offers the opportunity for further development and training within Ophthalmology.

There may be a possibility of cross site working at Ophthalmology Outpatients at The Princess Royal Hospital Hospital, Telford, so flexibility is a must. Some weekend and evening working will be required.

Main duties of the job

The position will involve undertaking a variety of skills such as carrying out visual acuities, visual field testing, ocular coherence tomography, assisting with minor ops and scrubbing to assist with intravitreal injections.

Working for our organisation

A newly constructed theatre suite specialising in cataract surgery opened in February 2021 at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and it is anticipated there will be future opportunities to rotate into this area, offering further diversity to the role.

Each person, patient or visitor, visiting our ophthalmic departments will be met with courtesy and respect. The individual will be treated confidentially with dignity maintained at all times, thus maintaining a high standard of individualised care.

In applying our philosophy of care we aim to deliver a high standard of care to all patients within the department ensuring that each person leaves understanding the information needed to make an informed decision regarding their care and that all their needs are met.
