We have available:

3 x 20 hours per week positions  

An opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic persons with a caring and friendly nature to join the Phlebotomy Team at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. Cross site working will be expected at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Community Diagnostic Centre, Telford and Whitchurch Community Hospital (working on Wards and in the community.)  

These are Trainee Phlebotomist posts. Full and extensive departmental training will be given to the successful candidate.

We are recruiting for 3 part time vacancies, to include weekends and bank holidays. This will be on a Rota basis and time off will be given when on weekend duty.

The successful candidates should have excellent communication skills, be able to work under pressure, have an approachable nature, ability to fulfil the travel requirements and the ability to record data accurately. Shifts will vary according to service needs so flexibility is important.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will be part of a team that provides  phlebotomy service to The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. 

Duties will include - 

  • Collection of blood samples by venepuncture from adults in general practice, ward and outpatient setting.
  • Collection of blood samples by venepuncture from children age 12 months and over in outpatients or children’s clinics.
  • Recording and labelling of samples.
  • Delivery of samples to the laboratory: by hand, via the hospital vacuum air tube system, by portering staff and transport systems.

At present we have 40 Phlebotomists working across 4 sites. We provide a safe booking appointment system at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford (PRH), The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) and Whitchurch Community Hospital.

We cover inpatients (PRH/RSH only) and outpatients at all 4 sites, providing a service for both GP's and consultants.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Good general level of education - GCSEs including Maths, English at grades 9 - 4 or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy competency certificate
Desirable criteria
  • First Aid at Work certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in a general phlebotomy department
  • Experience of paediatric venepuncture
  • Experience working in a hospital
Desirable criteria
  • Previous patient or customer service experience
