Band 2

Job overview

Band 2 to 3 HCSW Development Programme

Are you interested in mental health but have little or no experience?

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Healthcare Support Worker development role, starting at band 2. With the support of the Clinical Bank Team, you will be able to develop into an experienced Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker. During this process you will support our teams deliver fantastic care to our service users, helping to ensure our service users receive the very best service possible. Whether you are helping to undertake observations, supporting service users with their personal care, engaging with service users when they are distressed, worried, depressed or agitated you will see first-hand the impact your role makes every minute you are working.

We in turn can offer you a clear pathway to complete all statutory and mandatory training and the care certificate. We will provide you with regular support and supervision from an assigned mentor to help you achieve the band 3 Healthcare Support Worker role within 12 months.

Our hospitals and teams don't close, so as you would expect, we do work on a shift basis. Our service users need our care and attention 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

The Trust is required to carry out mandatory employment checks. Please bring the original ID documents requested below to your interview if selected.

Interviews are to be held on Wednesday 22nd July 2026.  No other interview date or remote interviews will be available.

Main duties of the job

You will support our teams deliver fantastic care to all our service users, helping do whatever it takes to ensure our patients receive the very best service possible. Whether you are helping to undertake observations, supporting service users with their personal care, listening to service users when they are distressed, worried, depressed or agitated you will see first-hand the impact your role makes every minute you are working.

If you have always aspired to work in your local hospital caring for our patients and working alongside highly motivated teams, then you are going to love this role. We will invest in you and your development by supporting you, ensuring you stay up to date with all clinical competencies and that you meet the government standards for care within the NHS.

Working for our organisation

We are the lead provider of healthcare for people with serious mental illness, learning disabilities and autism across Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES), Swindon and Wiltshire, and Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

We aim to provide High Quality, Compassionate Care everywhere, every day. This means our services will be safe, clinically effective and provide a positive all-round experience for our patients, families and carers. And we believe passionately in treating everyone with kindness, respect and empathy.

Key to this is providing a supportive and safe environment for our 4,000 staff where we all feel welcome and able to do the best we can for those we support. Our staff and teams work incredibly hard delivering services across more than 90 locations, covering 2,200miles, to more than 1.8million people.

At AWP we actively encourage applicants from all backgrounds; we are particularly keen to encourage applications from people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, those with disabilities and from the LGBTQ+ community. We want people to bring their unique blend of experiences, backgrounds, perspectives and knowledge to AWP, as diversity makes us stronger.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Sometimes the role will be tough, you will see and be involved in some challenging situations involving our service users, be kept busy and deliver some direct care. We don’t want to shy away from this and we do know that this part of the role isn’t for everyone. That is why we run such a robust interview and assessment process to make sure that you understand the role. As much as we need to assess you to check you have all those skills, attributes, resilience and the caring nature we need, you need to be sure you understand what the HCSW developmental role entails. We cannot wait to welcome you to one of our interview and assessment days.

Our expectation is that you attend paid training, complete an induction programme, attend regular 1:1 supervision arranged with your mentor. Also attend Peer Group Supervision on the following dates 12/10/2026, 03/12/2026, 09/02/2027, 07/04/2027, 04/06/2027 and 05/08/2027.
