Job overview
The Nursing careers and professional Standards Team offers a comprehensive service by supporting staff through local induction/probationary period through to the implementation of strategies to improve staff training, education and development. The post holder will be working within an integrated skill mix team which includes Pre-registration and Apprenticeship Pathways, International nursing pathway and Preceptorship.
Main duties of the job
Avon and Wilshire’s Mental Health Partnership (AWP) Preceptorship Program is a collaborative corporate and clinical 12-month program provided to support specified registered healthcare professionals (Preceptees) to develop their confidence and competence during the transition into their new roles with the support of a more experienced registrant (Preceptors):
· Newly Registered Health Care Professionals (NRHCP’s): include Registered Nurses, Registered Nursing Associates, and Allied Health Professionals
· Practitioners returning to professional practice.
· Registered practitioners new to AWP.
· Internationally Educated Allied Health Professionals and Registered Nurse recruits.
The Preceptorship Lead will work in partnership with NCPS Team colleagues, Heads of Service, Service Leads, Preceptors and Preceptees to further develop the Preceptorship Programme and be a Preceptorship Champion to communicate the vital importance of Preceptorship within AWP.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for:
- Leading the continuing development of the Corporate Preceptorship Program to incorporate the
- National Preceptorship Framework 2022 and encourage Preceptees to espouse the Trust’s Mission,
- Leadership Behaviors and contribute to the Trust Strategy.
- Leading and overseeing the preceptorship programme within AWP ensuring key messages are communicated to relevant people across AWP.
- Lead the implementation and maintenance of Preceptorship systems and processes and support the workforce development agenda.
- Engage in effective communication and partnership working, internal and external, in relation to AWP’s alignment with the National Preceptorship Framework 2022 and meet the National Health Service England (NHSE) Post-Registration agenda to grow our workforce.
- Lead in the delivery, participation and ongoing evaluation of the Corporate Preceptorship training days.
- Have line management responsibilities for the Band 6 Preceptorship Facilitator(s).
- To undertake Line Management responsibility for staff within the Pre-Registration Team.
- Deputise for the Senior NCPS management team as necessary in the line management functions of staff within the NCPS Team.
- Will ensure the appropriate planning, preparation and delivery of a variety of training programs and will be expected to work autonomously across the Trust to deliver these and act as an expert resource where appropriate.
- Escalating any concerns regarding Preceptee training attendance, behaviour or fitness to practice to line managers.
- Working across the Trust at external locations and Trust sites in response to Preceptorship training needs.
- Planning, organising and developing programs of training, some of which maybe complex, to meet the needs of various groups of preceptees and clinical staff.
- Supporting the wider NCPS Team to deliver specific training to meet service need. Working closely with the other members of the PPET Team and Organisational Development to develop and possess the clinical knowledge and experience to deliver statutory, mandatory and Role
- Specific training programmes both free-standing and as part of the trust induction programme for new
- employees to ensure training meets demands.
- Undertaking evaluation of the training delivered and use the information to inform the delivery of subsequent training programmes
- Supporting the NCPS Team to provide support, leadership and expert advice on training and education across the Trust
- Using their clinical expertise to develop strong links with managers and clinical staff so that Preceptees receive the clinical training and competency support to meet their development needs, increasing their confidence and competence and supporting their transition to professional practice.
- Actively line managing the Preceptorship processes and collaborating with the budget holder to make decisions around Preceptorship resources, managing the Preceptorship training programme to ensure there are sufficient places, trainers and trained Preceptors to meet demand, as well as taking responsibility to ensure funds linked to training provision are accurately captured, monitored and reported for CPD income allocation.
- Supporting the Head of NCPS in training and with projects relating to wider aspects of training and education.
- Coordinating the identification of Preceptees with NCPS Team Administration staff, AWP’s Recruitment Team and Clinical Service Teams, to ensure NRHCP’s are enrolled on the program and are provided with appropriate levels of preparation and support for the transition into their professional and regulated roles.
- Leading the design, development, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of a Preceptor
- Database and ensure there are sufficient trained Preceptors so that each Preceptee is allocated a
- Preceptor in time for their start date within their band 5 posts.
- Taking a lead in managing the Preceptorship Database with support from the Preceptorship Facilitator and NCPS Team Administrators to keep track of progress and completion of Preceptees through the program, providing quarterly reports to the Head Nurse for Professional Standards.
- Identifying and providing development and support for all Preceptors as a continuous cycle of evaluation and improvement.
- Acting as a point of escalation to maintain the relationship between preceptor and preceptee using coaching skills and techniques to facilitate as appropriate.
- Seeking feedback and performing regular checks that the Preceptor/Preceptee relationship is working satisfactorily.
- Regularly liaising with Clinical Service Managers to identify, motivate and develop staff into the role of Preceptor and support their development.
- Accessing data from AWP electronic systems to aid the compilation of reports and utilising a range of IT systems and skills to produce and interpret and communicate a variety of reports across a range of internal AWP governance forums, Integrated Care System forums, and Regional forums.
- Design and implement processes to continually measure the effectiveness and impact of preceptorship programme on retention and staff engagement.
- Evaluating programs using ongoing feedback received from Preceptees, Preceptors and clinical service colleagues to ensure it meets the needs of the Preceptees, supports Preceptors and is operating within the Department of Health framework (2010), NMC Principles of Preceptorship (2020) and National Preceptorship Framework (2022)
- Leading on the introduction of the Preceptorship Champion role to drive forward the Preceptorship agenda and create networks across NCPS.
- Working collaboratively with internal stakeholder groups to produce reports that demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of preceptorship programs on retention and staff engagement.
- Offering appropriate advice to provide a fair, equitable, inclusive, quality learning experience for preceptees and address any issues that may be raised in a timely manner, the post holder will therefore make themselves aware where support is available within the trust to offer the appropriate advice.
- Leading on the implementation and maintenance of IT systems and processes to ensure the Trust meets the National Preceptorship Framework quality standards.
- Supporting operational Line Managers, Service Managers and Human Resource Business Partners where required to manage complex problems, working towards agreeable solutions, and prioritising staff retention.
- Active involvement in Regional and local Preceptorship forums and Preceptorship Leads to support the development of Preceptorship across the local Integrated Care System (ICS) and Regional Forums.

Essential Criteria
Essential criteria
- The post holder will hold a Professional Nursing or Allied Health Professional qualification with an active professional registration.
- Educated to master’s degree level or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- The post holder will have specialist and highly developed knowledge acquired through experience or informal/formal training on Preceptorship standards and Preceptorship delivery.
- Influence change through regular engagement with Corporate and Operational Directors, Service Leads and Service Managers to support the growth and development of high-quality Preceptorship support across the organisation.
- Proven experience in managing own workload and working independently. To provide leadership and expert advice and support across the organisation in relation to supervision, assessment and support for preceptorships.
Desirable criteria
- Awareness the National Preceptorship Framework standards and requirements.
- Experience of managing workforce planning initiatives.
