The AWP Payroll Department is looking for a Payroll Officer to join their busy, fast-paced team serving over 5000 employees each month across the South West.

You must be willing to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service, have excellent communication, numeracy and computer skills. You must be organized and conscientious with an ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines.

Knowledge of NHS Terms and Conditions will be an advantage as well as previous payroll experience, but full training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Take responsibility for a defined payroll area as defined by the payroll manager, implementing the necessary updates on a regular basis.

Data entry ensuring a high level of accuracy.

Ensuring payments comply with National terms and conditions, Local policies and statutory legislation.

Using knowledge and experience, ensures that correct payments or deductions are made in relation to notification of changes of conditions of service, re-grading, promotions etc. in accordance with conditions of service, contacting relevant manager as needed.

Actively investigates any discrepancies which have arisen and satisfactorily explains individual pay matters.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience of PAYE, National Insurance, NHS Pay Conditions of Service and the NHS Pension Scheme.
  • Proven experience of the Electronic Staff Record.
  • Proven experience in a payroll role.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in accordance with policies and procedures in a large complex organisation.

Skills/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of SMP,SSP & SPP
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office.
  • High level of numeracy and accuracy e.g. able to resolve complex Payroll queries.
  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information at all levels within the organisation.
  • Influence others within the team through a positive approach to change.
  • Able to work under pressure to specific deadlines.
  • Customer focussed
Desirable criteria
  • Able to work with speed and accuracy.
  • Able to work to own initiative and set priorities.

Qualifications

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade C and above or equivalent.
