Medical Secretary/Patient Pathway Coordinator

Band 3

Job overview

Do you have a great eye for detail and want to support patients with their journey through our hospital?  If so then we would love to talk to you.

We are looking for someone who can proof-read and edit clinical correspondence, supporting our outstanding General Surgery clinicians to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients. You will be the first point of contact for patients so need to have a calm and empathetic nature and be able to use initiative to deal with any queries from either patients or the clinical teams.  In addition you will learn about the pathways for both routine elective patients and cancer patients and understand where patients are in their journey, ensuring any diagnostic tests are ordered and liaising with the consultants to ensure that they are aware of results, minimising delays to patients being given their results. It is a busy department where there is always something new to learn.  We can promise you will never be bored!

This is a full time post working 37.5 hours, some of which can be worked remotely.  However we would consider a job share.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a complete medical administrative service including RTT, patient correspondence and editing and formatting letters.
  • Liaising with Nurses, Doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team including Inpatient / Outpatient Bookings teams to provide a quality service for the patients.
  • Working as part of a team, sharing responsibility for the smooth running of the administrative service to deliver safe patient care
  • To provide a first point of contact, answering all telephone enquiries, taking and relaying messages in a polite and helpful manner, and using own judgement to establish the priority of issues and taking action as appropriate.
  • To deal with incoming correspondence, using initiative as appropriate to expedite issues and administer patient appointments when necessary.
