Assistant Specialty Manager

Job overview

To lead and support the effective delivery of key operational services for the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) & Orthodontics Department in line with relevant Divisional and Trust policies, reporting to the Specialty Manager.


To undertake projects across the Division, as determined by the Specialty Manager. This is a full-time position, fixed term for 12 months. 

Main duties of the job

To be operationally responsible for the delivery of key divisional and organisational targets, 
for example: achieving 18 week Referral to Treatment (RTT) patient pathway and ensuring 
that Trust Policies with regard to patient care are adhered to, for example, the Patient 
Access Policy
▪ To attend weekly performance meetings and ensure that accurate and clear information is 
provided in relation to key targets and standards
▪ To act as a key point of escalation/contact to troubleshoot issues which may prevent timely 
provision of patient care, liaising with Clinical and Nursing colleagues as appropriate, 
escalating complex or contentious issues to the Specialty Manager as appropriate
▪ To take part in the surgical bed management rota and be the point of contact for issues that 
are escalated by the bed managers in relation to elective surgical patients
▪ To monitor clinic templates to ensure that they meet the requirements of the Directorate and 
to be instrumental in exploring new ways of working within your area and the wider Division

Essential criteria
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills; IT data management skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with all professional disciplines, both internal and external, e.g. senior managers/clinicians/consultants
  • Able to meet deadlines, targets and to work under pressure
  • Enhanced problem solving techniques and strategic thinking
