You will have line management responsibility for a small team of paediatric nurses and provide teaching to the rest of the Day Surgery Unit team. You will have protected time for teaching and education.

We provide care to a large demographic and the service is ever growing to accommodate the ever-changing needs of our patients and families.

This will be a varied role and the post holder will be able to demonstrate collaborative working alongside a multi-disciplinary team across the surgical pathway and our children's Ward.

To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:

  • The development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient.

To be designated to manage the ward/department and/or act as a deputy to the person holding continuing responsibility. To develop leadership skills and experience in the management of the ward/department.

Main duties of the job

  • To proactively co-ordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with RUH Discharge Policy ensuring involvement of other agencies as necessary.
  • To promote a patient focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
  • To educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
  • To provide information thus enabling patients to make choices about adopting a healthier lifestyle.
  • To ensure that all clinical documentation is completed correctly by members of the nursing team.
  • To maintain a safe ward/department environment.
  • To assist in the establishment and monitoring of protocols/care pathways.
  • To promote and maintain effective communication within the ward/department, GPs and community staff and other hospitals with regard to ongoing patient care.
  • To maintain patient confidentiality and ensure all staff understand the relevance of this.
  • To supervise junior staff in the delivery of care, through effective monitoring, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
  • To provide emergency cover, where possible, within the unit.
