Pathology IT Projects Manager

Job overview

We are looking for a Pathology IT Project Manager to lead our Pathology IT team through an exciting 12-month period of digital change.

In this role, you will support the department while overseeing the implementation of significant, transformational digital projects that will modernise, streamline, and enhance how our laboratory services operate, ensuring smooth delivery and maximum impact.

You will develop, deliver, and maintain systems that enable effective management and analysis of laboratory data across all pathology disciplines. This position involves leading complex and specialised projects that require strong project management skills. Additionally, you will lead IT service improvements aligned with the objectives of the Trust and the West of England Pathology Network.

Main duties of the job

You will provide leadership and oversight for key resources requires to deliver the Pathology digital programme, including staff, equipment, consumables and workspace, ensuring these are aligned to project priorities and used efficiently.

You will play a lead role across Pathology Information Management, a key component of the role being to project manage transformational digital projects ensuring risks to the delivery are escalated appropriately and the benefits realised.

Key projects include implementation of a shared unified patient record across the Pathology network, Histopathology digitisation, upgrade of LIMS, upgrade of ICE order comms and build of a single electronic patient record across the three member Trusts within our ICB, BSW.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • First degree or equivalent
  • Project management qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
Desirable criteria
  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences (IBMS approved) or equivalent degree level education in an IT discipline
  • Certificate of Expert Practice in Quality Management, Training or Leadership and Management.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven record of managing change and delivering projects
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems, Quality Assurance
  • Multi-disciplinary working experience
Desirable criteria
  • Practical experience of Biomedical procedures in a relevant discipline
  • Experience of using Pathology IT systems and Hospital PAS systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL, Networking, HL7 messaging and Linux systems

Specific Skills

Essential criteria
  • Adept at problem solving, taking the initiative and sound decision making
  • Able to instil confidence and motivate others
  • Good verbal, written and communication skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced grasp of technical/mechanical aspects of Pathology IT systems.
