Respiratory Physiologist

Job overview
The purpose of this role is to assist in the delivery of high-quality respiratory
physiology diagnostic and monitoring services to patients, under supervision. The
post-holder will perform routine respiratory function tests and contribute to sleep
diagnostic services, supporting accurate diagnosis and effective patient management.
Main duties of the job

Clinical & Technical
Perform and interpret routine respiratory investigations in accordance with ARTP/BTS
standards, including but not limited to:
Spirometry
Lung volumes and gas transfer
Bronchodilator reversibility testing
Oximetry
Assist with six minute walk tests
Assist in the set-up of sleep studies.
Ensure equipment is appropriately maintained, calibrated, and safe for use.
Maintain accurate records of investigations and ensure timely entry of results onto
clinical systems.
Contribute to audit and quality assurance activities.
Patient Care
Provide a high standard of care and reassurance to patients during physiological
testing.
Explain procedures clearly to patients, addressing any concerns and ensuring
informed consent.
Promote patient dignity, comfort, and safety at all times.

Work in line with departmental policies, procedures, and ARTP/NHS best practice
guidance.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with NHS and Trust policies.
Participate in continued professional development (CPD) and training.
Assist senior staff in research, service development, and student training as
appropriate.
Governance & Safety
Adhere to infection control policies and ensure safe working practices in all areas.
Report equipment faults, incidents, or risks promptly in line with Trust policy.
Contribute to maintaining a safe and supportive working environment.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- English and Mathematics Grade 4 and higher GCSE
- BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Respiratory) or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
- English and Mathematics Grade 4 GCSE
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience working within an NHS respiratory physiology department.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
- Eligible for voluntary registration with RCCP/HCPC (or working towards).
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of respiratory physiology, diagnostic techniques, and patient care principles.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a small, supportive team.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
