Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our well-established team of Surgical Nurse Practitioners/ Trainee ACPs providing Surgical SDEC at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The post involves working as part of the multidisciplinary team and as a valued member of the on-call team

You must hold a first degree in a relevant subject, with significant post registration experience including experience at a senior level.

Ideally you should have experience in Emergency General surgery.

Main duties of the job

 

  • Work as part of the on-call surgical team in the triage, assessment and delivery of emergency care to Emergency Surgical Patients
  • Help Implement and coordinate the delivery of Same Day Emergency Care for General Surgical Patients.
  • Recognise unwell and deteriorating patients. 
  • Ensure a high level of relevant decision-making skills, 
  • Appropriately use safety netting advice in the best interests of the patient.
  • Ensuring the continued accuracy and confidentiality of patient’s records and clinical information using databases.
  • Undertake quality improvement work
  • Responsible for the assessment of care needs to include simple and complex clinical problems of the patient
  • Enhance the communication link between theatre, patient and ward, 
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for the patient
  • Able to identify the requirements of the patient needs in elective/emergency situations and have the knowledge and skills to act accordingly
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters to overcome any problems in communication and to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with the NMC
  • Degree in Adult Nursing / Higher Education Diploma
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of professional updating in last 12 months
  • Evidence of post registration study and training

Skills/Knowledge/ Ability

Essential criteria
  • Band 7 -Band 7 - Educated to degree level or MSc with appropriate level of experience – Being in possession of or undertaking a Nurse Practitioner course with completed and up to date competence in Physical Assessment and Clinical Reasoning and/or Pathophysiology and Diagnostic Reasoning. Being in possession of non-medical prescribing course
  • Band 6 -Educated to degree level or MSc with appropriate level of experience – Undertaking or willing to undertake Nurse Practitioner course with up to date competence in Physical Assessment and Clinical Reasoning and/or Pathophysiology and Diagnostic Reasoning. Non-Medical prescribing course (or completion within 3 years of starting post).
  • Acute Surgical Experience at Band 6 or above
  • Awareness of evidence based practice and current research
  • Able to work safely under pressure across completing priorities
Desirable criteria
  • Post-registration qualification and training preferably in specialty area.
  • Experience of Same Day Emergency Care
  • ILS Course
  • Previous experience of working as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Leadership qualification
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification
