Job overview
To support patients and clinicians in ENT outpatients
To assist in providing patient care in accordance with the individual care plan and the wishes/choice of the patient in accordance with instructions and training received, reporting any changes in condition promptly to the Registered Nurse or Doctor.
Recognise emergency situations and initiate an appropriate and timely response.
Under direction, to undertake additional duties when trained and competent as follows: (examples)
- Accurately record patient’s vital signs, e.g. temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate. Recognise and report abnormalities.
- Simple dressings and phlebotomy and capillary blood monitoring.
Main duties of the job
Promote and maintain patient privacy and dignity. Ensure that patient confidentiality is respected at all times, including verbal and written information.
Contribute to patient assessments, making sure that any information provided by the patient which is relevant to their care is handed on to the Registered Nurse or Doctor.
Provide support and reassurance to patients and others at times of loss or distress, ensuring that the Registered Nurse or Doctor in charge is aware of any communication that has taken place.
Assist the Nurse team to ensure that equipment is kept clean, well maintained and ready for use, and that broken items are sent promptly for repair in accordance with local procedures .Assist the nursing team to ensure that supplies/stocks are maintained Assist in the maintenance of department cleanliness and tidiness and adhere to Infection Control Policy at all times.
To safely obtain, transmit and store information relating to the delivery of a care service.
Assist Registered Nurses and clerical staff in administrative duties as required and to undertake errands to other departments when requested.
To escort patients to and from other wards/departments in accordance with the hospital escort risk assessment protocol.

Desirable criteria
- Previous experience working as a Healthcare Support Worker in an acute hospital setting
- Previous outpatient experience
- Previous experience assisting with minor procedures
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Care Certificate or ability to work towards
- A Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 3 NVQ, BTEC or equivalent international qualification in healthcare. Or can demonstrate the equivalent level of experience.
- Understand and communicate verbally and writing in English
- Numeracy and Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
- In possession of or undertaking the healthcare support worker apprenticeship
- GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
