Job overview
The Trust is recruiting a substantive Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the North Bristol community CAMHS team for 3 days per week (6 PAs). You will work alongside two experienced Consultant colleagues and a well‑established, multidisciplinary team that includes Psychology, Nursing, Family Therapy, Psychotherapy and Primary Mental Health Specialists.
The service is currently implementing the i‑THRIVE model, offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to service transformation across multiple agencies.
You will also be part of a wider network of 17 supportive Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists working across:
-
Five community CAMHS teams
-
Two Learning Disability CAMHS teams
-
An Intensive Support and Hospital Assessment Team
-
A Tier 4 inpatient unit
-
A range of specialist CAMHS services
This is a well‑resourced, collaborative environment with strong clinical leadership and opportunities to shape the future of CAMHS provision across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
Main duties of the job
The post‑holder will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents and families presenting with severe and complex mental health difficulties. Clinical responsibility will apply only to those patients seen directly by psychiatrists within the CAMHS team.
The consultant will not routinely act as care coordinator. All patients on the consultant’s caseload will have an allocated care coordinator from within the multidisciplinary team.
Key clinical duties include:
-
Providing new assessments, follow‑up appointments and psychiatric reviews
-
Offering consultation to colleagues and partner agencies
-
Participating in multi‑agency liaison, including education, social care, early help teams, voluntary sector organisations and primary care
-
Being available for unpredictable emergency work when required
The job plan comprises 5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) sessions and 1 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) session per week, reviewed annually through the job planning process.
The consultant will provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team, working closely with the clinical service manager, team manager and other senior staff. When required, the post‑holder will contribute to Mental Health Act assessments.
The role also involves close liaison with community paediatrics, adult mental health services, and other agencies supporting children and young people.
