Job overview

We are looking to welcome an enthusiastic, compassionate and experienced Consultant Clinical/Counselling Psychologist, who can play a significant part in enhancing and developing the psychological care of adults with diabetes across our locality. You will have previous experience of leadership and working in diabetes and physical healthcare settings, and will be looking to apply and expand your knowledge of clinical/counselling psychology in this area further.

The post holder will be joining an established team of psychological professionals working within a range of areas at Great Western Hospital, including Cancer Services, Pain Management, Critical Care, Weight Management, Paediatric Diabetes and Staff Health and Wellbeing. We meet regularly as a team for departmental team meeting, and value CPD, creativity and team wellbeing.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be the clinical, strategic and operational lead for the GWH Adult Diabetes Psychology Service. This will require working autonomously within professional, trust and departmental guidelines, and exercising responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the diabetes psychology service. They will be responsible for developing, leading, managing and providing an entirely autonomous and systematic clinical psychology service to adult patients of the Diabetes Care team in the general hospital setting.  The post holder will be responsible for enhancing the psychological care provided by the specialist diabetes care team in a variety of ways, including consultancy and training with the adult diabetes team, and will carry an appropriate clinical caseload of patients with a wide variety of difficulties and presentations, as well as contributing to appropriate multidisciplinary interventions and pathways within the service. As a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, the post holder will be accountable for his/her own professional actions and will also manage and supervise other psychologists working across diabetes and/or endocrinology services. In collaboration with the Lead for Clinical Health Psychology, the post holder will carry out and contribute to audit, policy and service development, and research activities and/or programmes as appropriate and required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Person specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential criteria
  • Accredited British Psychological Society (BPS) Doctoral Clinical/Counselling Psychology qualification or equivalent
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Desirable criteria
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
  • Additional study/qualifications in illness or health psychology and related treatment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive clinical experience post qualification of working in an acute setting with adults with diabetes and/or other complex medical health conditions.
  • Extensive experience of, and commitment to, multidisciplinary working.
  • Experience of leadership
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision to other health professionals, qualified clinical psychologists and clinical psychologists in training.
  • Post-qualification experience of service development and planning
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of representing the profession in local or regional policy forums.
