Job overview

Following fresh investment into the service, the Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative consultant psychiatrist to provide high quality medical input into Windswept Ward, Swindon.

The aim of the post is to support the current services to work effectively with the core cohort and to help develop the future service offer 
to meet the needs of this cohort locally. This includes providing leadership in the evolution of the rehabilitation offer for BANES, Swindon and Wiltshire areas and development of new service models 
in line with local need.

This may include contributing to or leading the development of a more integrated pathway with potential inclusion of a community offer that supports continuity of care and a seamless, person centred approach to rehabilitation. In addition, protected SPA time will enable opportunities for quality improvement, pathway development, strategic planning and collaborative working with system partners.

The post holder will be responsible for providing consultant input to the Windswept ward. The post holder will work alongside a MDT including a Foundation Year 2 trainee, Nurses, Psychologist (Part Time), Occupational Therapist, health Care Assistants and Dietician. As the post develops there is likelihood of a core trainee or higher being allocated to the unit.

The post holder is expected to take the lead in the review of placements outside of the area for BSW service users only. This includes evaluating individuals who have been placed in different in different parts of the country, with the goal of transitioning them back to their local community.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide full consultant cover across the working week to patients admitted to Windswept. This includes direct and indirect clinical care, supervision of junior staff, consultative work with colleagues and other teams, and psychiatric leadership alongside other senior roles in the services.

· The consultant is expected to take the lead in the review of placements outside of the area for BSW service users . This includes evaluating individuals who have been placed in different parts of the country, with the goal of transitioning them back to their local communities in BaNES, Swindon or Wiltshire. This transition will be facilitated by stepping down to Windswept, linking up with the recovery community services, development of care pathways, and bespoke care packages by working closely with social care, as required.

· The post holder will be the Lead consultant for the BSW rehabilitation pathway

The consultant is expected to support the development of the strategic direction for the care pathway to ensure alignment with national and local healthcare priorities, maintain and provide clinical expertise, support multi-disciplinary team development within the pathway, support analysis of the current service provision and identify areas for improvement. The lead consultant will also be actively involved in service transformation initiatives, engage in clinical audits, research, and peer review to enhance care quality

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
  • CCT with Rehabilitation endorsement

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in an inpatient/community setting.
Desirable criteria
  • Specific rehabilitation service experience, including in assessing, treating and managing complex psychosis, and working effectively across systems of care to support recovery
  • Experience of partnership working

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, in order to effectively work with patients, carers and staff.

  • Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in Adults of working age and to deal with crisis situations.

  • Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a Consultant.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of alternatives to inpatient admission care approaches
  • Excellent knowledge of diverse range of interventions.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
  • Understand principles of teaching.

Research and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project.

Management

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
